You'll probably ruin your MAF... It will probably make your CEL come on and possibly do some damage to your engine.

I'm going to vote damage to your intake valves if/when something gets sucked in there. Engines draw alot of air even at idle

Yeah.... Most Newer Golf and Jettas (93 and newer) have the type of air meter that uses a heated wire, and depending on how much air flows over it, it cools the wire and sends a signal accordingly. Any sort of residue on this wire will render the maf useless. Gasoline engines won't run, and I guess diesels loose all their power... So with you, it could actually strand you somewhere. If you suck up any water, dust, leaves, bugs it can make major damage. Valves won't sustain dammage at first, but you could clog your intake manifold, or an intake port in the head... Dust in the combustion chamber will turbocharge wear on your engine. If you run your engine for one summer without a filter, you probably perform 15 years of normal wear on the engine.
Don't do it.

I say go for it. your intake will sound really cool, and your car will prolly make more power. I want pics of when it all finally decides to crap out on you/somethign blows up/you get stuck on a date with that one really hot chick. Mayhaps you should empty out all the oil too...

OMG 8O thats crazy...
All I have to say is It was just a consideration to take out the filter...HOWEVER, with all of this info lets just say I take it out, my intake would "sound really cool and get more power" then, taking out the oil will lighten up my car by like 1 lb./kilo, maybe lose the head lights for better ventilation for my engine, the seat belts+buckles are useless and are just extra weight along with those stupid "air-bag" things- I mean who'd trust their life to a balloon?...Taking all of that off, Id gain some massive HP and power/weight ratio and In theory, I could........dare I say it?....
