Hello, After switching my cars oil over to a synthetic blend I am hearing a pretty loud tick. What should I do ?

It sound's like a lifter is not getting oil, or not enough of it. Did you use the same weight as the previous conventional oil?

Did you notice a change in oil pressure? Perhaps your oil pump doesn't like synthetic and decided to partially crap out on you. I'm with 92vr6Jetta on the lack of oil to a lifter idea.
Does the ticking go away once the car warms up?

Well I read on another site not to ever use a fram, so last night I changed the oil again and got a bosch filter. The ticking remains no matter what temp and I used the same weight. It sounds like it's running a bit more quite now so hopefully it go's away all together.

Are you using a cheap synthetic? I have read several reports that say that low quality synthetics can cause engine damage, they tend to plug small oil passages because the teflon particles are to large.

unless the car had syntehic in it since it was new don't bother putting it in. the old dino oil has built up and the engine likes it better. so unless you want to kill your lifters go back to dino oil. its prolly gonna start burning oil if you keep the synth oil.

Yikes I'll get the synth out tomorow after work. Thanks so much for saving me lol.

Dude... there is nothing wrong with synthetic... I use it all the time in all my cars for the past years, and I have never had a problem. Why would you want to take it out? Fram filters are good too... Never had a problem. I use 0W-40 Mobile 1 synthetic, but it's all the same stuff anyway. I'll bet it's just coincidence that your car is ticking.... If I were you I'd invest in an oil pressure gauge and keep an eye on that.

ok you know how dino oil builds up deposits. well as the engine wares the deposists compenstate for that. but if you get rid of them or run thinner, if it wasn't burning before it could start, it if wasn't tapping before then it could or is. the tapping is prolly cuz it can't keep the pressure becuase its not thick enough or it just doesn't like it.

Pretty much right after I changed back to dino the ticking ceased.

Thanks again. And now to make a post about my power steering pump.

DUMBEST

POST

EVER

The type of oil you use has NOTHING to do with this. If it was because of the oil change, then you were probably using gear box oil, or molasses.

OMG people, seriously.... You really think this problem is attributed to the use of synthetic over regular oil? C'mon guys... wtf...

yes cody. as engines wear the dino oil leave deposits to compensate. synthitic does't have or will clean out those deposits causeing it to tic, smoke, w/e. ive seen it done. we tried high mileage in my dads truck, it was burning oil. SAME WEIGHT. we went back to dyno it was better. synthitic flows 2 easy. there not thick oils. thin oil can cuase tapping more then thick. thick will just cause it because of lack of the oil. thin the lifters arnt holding it. the seals in the lifters are shot and need thicker oil. thats how it goes. here you do an experament. take a engine with more then 110,000 miles on it. that was only run on dino oil. then change it to synthic oil and see what happens. i tried it in my old jetta. it tapped. that had 118,000miles. it just needs thicker oil.

Sir, I run 100% synthetic in my 94 jetta with 192,000 miles on it, and it does not tick.

I'm shutting down this post due to excessive BS.
