The main Vortex Rocky Mountain thread is in the link below:

I have thought about maybe hitting up a drive in either late May or early June to cruise up the Uinta Mountain Scenic byway once the road opens, usually on or shortly after Memorial Day. For those of you who have not been on this drive, it is awesome. Gorgeous scenery, lots of corners and twisty's, and some elevation. The high point on this drive is +/- 10,000 feet at Bald Mountain Pass, descending to Mirror Lake, and then climbing again to Hayden Pass.

This would be a longer drive, similar to the Utah Lake cruise last year. We could drive to Hayden Pass from the Kamas/Park City area, then turn around and go back the way we came, or continue on to Evanston, Wyoming and then drive back to SLC via I-80.

Post up if you are interested, I usually drive this every year once the road opens up, and just do not want to go alone anymore. :D A nice bonus to going early in the season is a drastic decrease in traffic, on last years drive I saw four cars over a thirty mile section of road up there.

would it be cool if I invited the Bmw club? That would be a huge caravan! If not, I'll just tag along and get rides.

8) That would be cool, Cameron. I posted a link with Audiworld also. Last time we had a quick cruise about a month ago there were about as much Audi's in the group as VW's. Is it ClubDa? 8)

Awesome! SaltEater & those of you with car's having issues or will not be ready for the drive, my car may have some space. Plus, I think there will be some other cars that accomodate some people as well. I think Clark mentioned bringing the Vanagon, so we can haul dead animals/carcasses for a BBQ. Damn, if there is going to be 30-40 cars (not to mention the Audiworld group of folks) We are either going to need several BBQ's or just go somewhere to eat. Opinions?

yeah i could get clark to haul my BBQ i got two propane tanks, he's been to my house before. im up to bring it. i say a BBQ over a resturant prop less of a hassle unless it rains.

I think that cell phones, Nextels, or just plain walkie-talkies might come in handy on this drive. I know some people are going to haul ass, and others not. My car is slow, so I will probably hangs toward's the back of the group.

I did get a chance to call the ranger station and they stated that the road should be open in the second week of June. I will keep calling as time goes on to make sure it is open in time for the drive. The girl at the ranger station also told me that if we stop and take photos/BBQ, there is a $3.00 charge per car. Not too big of a deal, I am sure a lot of people will want to stop and get photos here and there.

P.S. Pic of her for fun:

It looks like Tim with the 2.0T Rabbit will be making this drive, along with Cameron from 30/20 motorsports. I doubt Cameron will have his VR6T mkII done by then, but if he does bring it I call first dibs on a ride in it.

Ok, this is the plan. On the 18th we should meet at Sugarhouse Park (1300 E 2100 S) in Salt Lake at 10:00 A.M. Originally I had thought that meeting at Streamline would work, but with this many cars there is no way in hell that Streamline can accomodate us. Also, I don't want to cause any animosity between the different VW shops around town by meeting at one over the other, ...etc. Sugarhouse Park is huge, so there should be no problem. Also the I-80 on-ramp is just up the road about two blocks, making the trip up Parley's a cakewalk.

Also this will most likely be a "bring your own meat" event, if I bought steaks for 50+ people I would have to re-finance already or some crap like that. When the cruise get's closer I will try and fill in the small details.

 Those of you planning on attending get ready for a badass cruise.

Just an FYI: The 18th is also the High Uintas Classic Bike race, going between Kamas and Evanston on hwy 150. The riders should be out of the way by the time we get up there, but just be careful. Remember the new Utah law, give bikers at least 3' of space.

If any one's from Park City, try not to get pulled over in Kamas, Heber City area, those cops hate people that live there, i forgot why, i used to live up there. I think it's cause we can read and have black friends.

Hopefully there should be 65-70 cars on the drive, with a few stranglers aside.

Here is an interesting fact. Pictured here is Mt. Olympus above all of the car's in this photo, with the black line. It's summit is 9,026 feet in altitude. The red line, above, is roughly our high point at Bald Mountain Pass at the highest point on the drive. 10,687 feet . Just kind of an eye opener!

http://www.hostdub.com/albums/92VR6JETTA/uinta2.sized.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was wondering what you people think about this one: The Mt. Nebo scenic byway, a longer cruise, not a long as the Mirror Lake run, maybe half as long depending on how far away you live. Very pretty scenery, another high altitude drive. Lot's of corners and twisties similar to Mirror Lake. Here is a map and some photos. Let me know what you all think.

Mt. Nebo, the tallest summit along the Wasatch front, 11,928 feet.

This is Devil's Kitchen, on the drive. The walk to it is less than the length of a football field. A miniature Bryce Canyon. :P
