Ive only worked on 8v's before, but I dont think you should have to take the head off. I did a cam swap in my 8v in 25min (with the x-flow it was like 35) It shouldnt be that hard because a VR6 doesnt have CamS. It has one cam, unless you have the 24v. You really need a bently. I dont even know if VR's have timing belts or chains. Just make sure you follow the prescribed procedure for removing/installing the journal caps. If you do it wrong you will snap the cam!
The only parts you should have to buy would be some assembly lube for the journals, and a valvecover gasket might be nice. Make sure you buy a good torque wrench if you dont already have one.

I'm pretty sure the VR6 has dual cams... I think you actually have to remove the head to change cams because (if I am not mistaken, and correct me somebody if I am wrong) the timing chain is internal...I dunno... Anybody have a bently?

ok, no one pay attention to me. But we all have to admit the VR6 was the wierdest motor out for a while. Definately cool, and an example of thinking outside the box. the 24v is an absolute marvel!

heres a good write up;

*****tex is good for something!
Doesnt look like the head came off, and he did the whole timing chain, tensioner, and guides!

true that... lol... I took that into the oil lube to have them change the oil, and when I popped the hood, he was like WTF IS THAT?!!! a front wheel drive inline 6?!!!!? Funny as hell.

well it is a inline V, the cylinders are on a 16degree angle i think, or somthing like that. its very weird, but i like the idea.
