I'm looking at parts online and I need to figure out if my car is the APF engine type. Anyone know where I can find this? I have a 2003 Jetta GLI (VR6).

No, man. I have a 2003 Jetta GLI (VR6). I was looking at oil filter on NAPA online. They have two filters listed for my car, one for AFP engine and one for non-AFP. I don't know which to choose because I don't know if my car is AFP or not?

I talked to a guy in parts at a VW dealership today and he couldn't seem to tell me if I had AFP or no AFP but that the AFP one should work so go with that. I'd still like to the know the difference and which one I have.
Another question I ran into when searching for oil filters online was the 12V vs 24V question. I don't know what I have there either. Sorry to be so dumb but if anyone can help, I'd like to know. Thanks.

I have the same car and I had trouble getting oil filters too. Everyone I looked up at most parts stores was wrong.
The one you want has a little stem on the top with an o-ring on it.
If it looks like this it's wrong:
http://www2.discountvdubparts.com/parts/parts1/discountvdubparts/wizard.jsp?year=2003&make=VW&model=JET-GLI-003&category=A&&part=Oil+Filter
I just get them at the dealer, then I know what I'm getting.
I think the engine code is labeled. on the driver's door jamb.

Thanks guys. I got the right filter I hope from the dealership right near my house. It was only $11. Then I got oil at NAPA today and it's a long story but the cashier wrang it up wrong and I got 6 quarts of synthetic 5W30 for $15.50. So tomorrow I try my first oil change. I'll let you know how much of a mess I make.

There's a very helpful description (with photos) of the oil change process over at vwvortex
It was done on an '02 GTI (same engine as the GLI).
clicky clicky....

Have some cat litter on hand. It's great for cleanup.

Well, I'm embarassed to admit that my oil change attempt was unsuccessful for the following reasons:
1) Didn't have big enough wrench for oil filter cap.
2) Didn't have oil pan.
3) Had trouble identifying oil drain bolt.
So, basically, I gave up. I gotta say I was extremely uncomfortable being under the car even though I had a jack stand and a floor jack (ready to catch in the event of an accident) under the car. There is like NO clearance under there. If the car fell, I woulda been SMOOSHED.
Anyway, I have an appointment at VW tomorrow for them to fix my trunk so I'm gonna let them do the oil change. Oh well.
Call me what you will...

rover, wandr'rer, nomad, vagabond!..... *puts down the air guitar*
Its all good joe, i was nervous changing the oil on my freinds jetta, im in no mood to get eaten by a car! Perhaps you could have the mechanic show you where the drain plug and filter go, so you can DIY next time. :)

For a home made oil pan, cut the side off a 1 gallon oil container

That's not a bad idea, although the VR6 holds 6 quarts.
I was overwhelmed a bit too the first time I did my own oil change. Once you do it a time ore two, you develop a system, and it becomes an easy task.
One of the best investments I made was a set of ramps. This beats fooling around with jack stands. And I feel a lot better about being under the car when it's on ramps. (be sure to get a good set of blocks for behind the tires too)
