I just purchased a 2002 Jetta TDI Auto. 58K. It was built in late 2001. Would anyone know if it has the extended wear Timing belt and tensioner, or the pre 2002 belt/tensioner. What would be the change interval for this model. Does the fact that it is an automatic (don't laugh) make a difference. :?:
Does anyone else have the same make, year, model and built in late 2001?

You need a new belt on that car right away!

VW has newer belts now that will last around 70,000 miles on a auto.

Go over to the TDI Club and find somebody in you area who will help you put a new belt on. It's not something you can just do on your own unless you own a Vag Com and all the special tools your going to need.

Are you sure. It only has 36,000 miles(59,000kil) on it now?

Ohhhhh I thought you meant 59,000 miles  Didn't see the k doh!

Your going to need a TB change at 40,000 or now if you choose. Make sure that you get the new 70,000 (atuo)/80,000 (manual) TB and new belt tensioner meant for the new TB.

I was told the 2002 has the longer life belt and tensioner. Am I wrong?

I know some 2002 cars came with the new TB belt, but I'm not really sure how you could find out :( Maybe if you ask on the TDI Club somebody might know a way to tell if you have the new or old TB. I would really like to know how to tell also. When I bought my TDI used, I was told they put a new TB on it at 60,000 miles. Being they did it in 2004, I'm sure it has the new 80,000 belt, but you never know for sure.

If you happen to find out a way to figure out which one you have please drop me a PM :)
