LOL, that would just be cool. Plain and simple. A 6 cyl porsche engine in a van... Just plain awesome.

I saw a 68 bus with a 4.3L chevy Vortec V6. Very sweet. He said that it's funny watching the looks on peoples faces when they get passed by an old VW bus going up a mountain.
I also saw a picture of a Vanagon/Unimogg mix, it was called a Vanamogg, very cool looking.

unimoggs are awesome!! my neighbor had one :D
Those chevy 4.3s really haul ass. We have one in our full sized van and when you floor it, it really goes. I can only imagine what one would be like in a bus....

I have a 4.3L in my GMC Sierra work truck. The supervisors have the same version of truck without the shell and all of the added weight, and they move! However I am hauling around 2700 pounds in mine on a regular basis and it is doggedly slow. Damn!
But not to get off topic, if I had a Vanagon with a Porsche swap I would cream. :P

My Blazer has the 4.3 in it, it's been reliable but it's kind of doggy. The 4.3 is a 350 (5.7L) with 2 cylinders removed (not sure if it's front , back, or middle that's been removed  ).
I've also heard of Vanagons with front wheel drive Audi engines/transaxles mounted in the back. the engine sits in front of the tranny and the tranny sits in the engine compartment.... it's very easy to check the ATF.
I have been told that Volvo used a 5 cyl diesel that was made by VW and will bolt right in to a Vanagon diesel.
Mr Diesel, do you know of any 5 cyl Volvo diesel engines built by VW?
I've heard of almost every Porsche engine being used in a vanagon. the problem with using higher hp engines in Vanagons is the tranny can't handle it. The one with the 4.3L chevy used a Porsche tranny. Porsche trannys are a common one to use for a Vanagon upgrade.
