I have a 87 Turbo diesel tranny that I want to drop into my 84 rabbit. Will the CVs from my 85 Jetta work? I am putting it on a 87 8V GTI engine.
Can I remove the CVs without pulling the engine? How hard/long will this take me?
How hard is it to pull a tranny off a engine (that is already out of the car) and then put it onto a different engine?
TIA,
Tyler
Am I going to need to buy any new parts?

Well, it depends. 020 trannys came with either 90mm or 100mm axle flanges, as long as they are the same size, they will work. Just measure the OD of the CV. Removing the axles is pretty easy. Before you jack it up, loosen the axle nuts. they are torqued on to 200+ ft/lbs so you'll need a long breaker bar or peice of pipe. Then remove the 8mm 12-point bolts that attatch the inner cv's to the tranny flanges, they will drop right out. If the motor is out of the car the tranny will be super easy, I would reccomend changing the clutch now even if it seems to be good. It is a lot harder to do a clutch with the motor installed and you'll be kicking yourself if it goes out (been there). And if you want to change only the CV's I would think again. They are a HUGE PITA. I did it cuz I'm a cheap bastid (actually just the boots) but it is soooo worth it to buy complete axles. Autozone sells a complete axle for just over $100 with a $40 core charge, and I just found them at carmadillo.com for $60.82 but a $95 core charge. I wonder if they pay shipping on the cores? That would be a sweet deal if so. Have fun!

What's my tranny code? It looks like this on the bottom
5
69042SGA
EDIT: I figured it out. I was looking in a mirror and forgot to flip the numbers around. It's a AGS. Anyone know what size CVs I would need?

As cheap as he got them for, that would be my guess.
Less labor intensive, IMO.

Because Axles come complete with both cv's pre-greased and the boots on(duh) Id like to see where you can get 4 cv's for less than the price of 2 full axles. Im telling you that it is both cheaper and easier to replace the full axle. I did the Cv boots when I first did my swap, and given the option again, I would have done the entire axle, it is THAT much of a pita!
Go to a shop and ask for CV's and they'll laugh. The completed job would cost over twice what it would doing the whole axle!
Have you done it? Would you do it again? Not me!

Thanks very much guys. I don't think I am going to have to do all this work now. Someone wants to trade my shell, gti engine, diesel tranny and 16v exhaust for a dewalt air compressor, impact gun, ratchet and hose. I'm thinking that I'll go for it.

Looks like I am going to be installing that tranny.
Around the same time, I am going to drop a 5 spd in my diesel rabbit. It has a 4 spd 4A tranny in it right now, but it will be getting a FF tranny. Unless someone can tell me if the AGS tranny or the one in my 85 Jetta would be better.
The thing is, I can't find any info on the 4A. I'm not 100% sure that is the code, just 90% sure. It was dark and I was using a flash light.
any insight would be much appreciated.
Oh yeah, can I just take the new clutch off my AGS and put it on whatever tranny I swap in? How hard is it to swap clutches? Will I need to buy anything?
Thanks guys

Well I spent 4 hours outside today in 2 degree F (-20 celcius) tempuratures preparing to remove my tranny. I spent a good 3 hours just getting the thing in the garage. I had to move 2 cars, shovel a trail to it and then haul it into the garage using the trailer. Once I got it in, I started removing everything in my way. The airbox, fuel lines and any other random wires and hoses. The starter is removed and I got the shift linkage unhooked. Hopefully this weekend I can get it out.
To get the CVs off the tranny, I need a special wrench right?
and can I jsut put a chuck of wood across the fenders to hold up the engine?

Yup, its a 12pt tri-square bit 8mm if I remember correctly. I bought mine off the MAC truck. I couldnt find it at any parts stores in my town. It is NOT a torx. Some people say it will work, but removing stripped out axle bolts is NO FUN! Buy the right tool, you'll thank yourself.

I forgot what size you said, so I bought a 12,10 and 8 mm socket. The 8mm one was 2.99 CND at sears... I paid 13.42 for all 3 of them.
Now I just have to find some time to work on the car...
EDIT: Aww crap. I bought the wrong things. I'll have to return these...
