My 2001 mk4 burns motor oil regularly (I do spirited driving once a week  ), so I need to add oil in between oil changes. Will adding motor oil with higher resistance to higher temperatures possibly eliminate any burning of oil? Would you guys recommend I get the SAE 10W60, as shown on the charts you guys provided? :?

Make sure that you take note that the chart is celcius. I doubt very much that you will need 10W60. 20W30 would probably be good for right now where you are, but it all depends on the tempurature.
Is the oil being burn in the engine, or is it escaping out of the engine?

BTW, here is the chart we are refering to

you might want to consider talking to your dealership about this... oil comsumption has been a 2.0 issue for a while and known to VW... do some net searching:

if they won't do anything for you, then you should try some different synthetics (Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc)... by the way you describe your driving, you should be using synthetic regardless!

and no do not use a 10W60 oil (not that you will find this rating very easily, not common)

I had a 2.0L 2000 Jetta and it drank lots of oil, all during light around town putting... I even had the VW TSB from a service manager friend of mine but since lost it in a HD crash... was going to get the dealership to start a consumption log, but instead sold it, it was a lemon anyway...

Ive heard about amsoil from my father, but i just recently heard about royal purple. How much do both of these brands retail for per bottle?

Matty, you might want to consider switching to thinner (5W30 or 10W30) for the winter... your NY winters aren't much different from mine here in Ontario so i know what they can be like!

does your 2L use much oil?

my first 2.0L AEG motor ( yeah im on my second) drank lots of it if you take it to the dealership for your next oil change the will do an oil consumption test and determin or not whether to replace the motor or the piston rings. my second aeg which is the one in my 2000 now is pretty decent it reads a quart low every 2500-3000 miles depends on how hard i push it within oil changes of course :p
