Any one tried the exhaust cam in the intake cam spot? I am going to try this but was hoping to hear from someone who has already done it.

Be careful! I've never tried it, and I really don't reccomend it.

Why would you do that?

No kidding... I'm not seenig his reasoning for wanting to do this.

The exhaust cam is way lumpier than the stock intake cam and I have heard stories of guys having huge horse power gains from this.

Well don't swap them over! Get another exhaust cam and replace the intake cam... don't change exhuast to intake... that'd probably be disasterous.

Others have done it and had success. I am not going to put the intake in the exhaust spot, just an exhaust in place of the intake. I may be a maniac but I am not afraid and I am going to do it. I will post results.

That's what I was thinking...

WARNING DO NOT EXCHANGE YOUR INTAKE CAM WITH AN EXHAUST CAM! apparently it is fatal.

well its gonna make the car run worse, cuz the exhuast has a longer duration. so your putting more air in but your not getting enought exhuast out then. that or the valves might over lap and have the intake and the ehuaxt open at the same time. that is bad, i wouldn't do this unless you like to hurt your engine and make it run like crap.

I think he was talking about finding an exhaust cam from another 16 valve and putting it in the place of the intake on the 16V

That's how I understood it.

thats what i ment, the intake has a shorter duration. so it runs smooth, with ti beign longer and the ehuast not being changed either it will run like total crap and it may overlap. or they will open at the same time. but if you want cams, buy the right ones, do not do this to your car.

hmmmmmmmm... I like the 16V engines.

Aren't the 16V engines considerably less reliable?

Mr_Diesel

yeah.... but they are worth the trouble.

i wouldn't say considerably... they can be solid engines, but theres more to them, so theres more to go wrong... i have a couple close friends with 16V mk2's and they ABUSE them (auto-xing, drag racing etc) and they run like tops... keep em maintained and get to know the engine intimately like they do, it'll be a sweet engine...

You only hear about problems with them because when the timing belt goes, there is serious dammage to the valves unlike it's 8V counterpart.

So as long as you replace the belt when you are supose to you should be fine?

So as long as you replace the belt when you are supose to you should be fine? I'd replace every 45,000 on a 16V just to be safe.

the 8V are all low end, the 16V are all top end, can't we just have the best of both worlds? :?

I have had my Jetta for about a year and a half now and have put way more then 45,000 miles on it and it was also on there when i bought the car, and my timing belt is okay, but after reading these i think i will change it.

What kind of car is it? You should post it up in the showroom so we can all see it.

Sorry about that guys. I am not dead I just got caught up in life and forgot to read the forums. I have not tried the dual exhaust cam set up yet because I had many other things to work on. Had some serious fuel pump isues in the summer and now I am facing a worn out axel and hub assembly. As far as the 16 valve thing it is a fun engine to have when it is running good. I beat the snot out of it and it keeps on running. I have removed the rev limiter so it is common for me to glance at the tac during a burnout and see it way into the gas gauge. I am not a big street racer but it is fun when you can suprise the guy next to you pulling away from the light.
