Just like the subject says.
I have an 84 full camper, with a 91 Jetta engine, 1.8 8v, mounted at 55 degrees using Vanagon diesel parts. Normal mounting in a Jetta is 15 degrees.
Wish I had used CIS or a TD, this digifant has only been one headach after another. :( :?

What's wrong with digifant? Anyway, do you want a 1.6L diesel engine? It needs some new gaskets, other than that, it's a perfect mate for the van.

I originaly wanted to use CIS to keep it simple, no eletronics, but someone talked me out of it saying that you can't modify the injector lines, later I found was false. So I bought a rolled over 91 Jetta, even test drove it, removed the engine and ECU harness and transplanted it to the Westy. Everything was great for several weeks then it started running rich, very rich, to the point of locking up the engine with gas. It took my forever to find the cause.... a bad pressure regulator, dumping a stream of gas in to no. one cylinder, ok fixed that a few weeks later the injectors quit firing, found a bad ground after many hours of searching, fixed again. months later injectors quit again, found a bad wire in the harness, fixed yet again. Fine for several months, injectors quit again, still haven't found the cause, it will run fine for ???? days or weeks then it will stall, may fire right back up, maybe in several minutes, or maybe in several weeks...

The above is a shortened version, very shortened!

I haven't had it out of the garage for at least 2 years now, I've run out of patients and money. I plan on getting it out this spring, I had the engine out, cleaned the block and all grounds, tore apart the harness and checked every wire and connection, I have 2 spare ECUs, if it still gives me trouble I'll either build my FI system or get a TD (mechanical), or a 5 or 6 cyl. NA Diesel, am told that VW built 5 and 6 cyl. versions of their I4 diesels, one should fit with modifing the engine compartment.

Is it a TD and what gaskets does it need? Let me guess.... it's in Utah?

What exactly is the point of that tent thingger on the Westy??? Is that so you can stand up or something??? or do you sleep up in that?

Both. With the top popped you have about 4sq/ft of standing room, and there's a second bed up their, so you can sleep 4.

That's awesome... There's a westy with a flat 4 in it... I almost bought it! I would SO live in that thing for like a year.

I think the extendable roof would allow me to grow some.... plants..... inside.

If you do buy a Westy with a flat 4 BE SURE IT'S AIR COOLED!!. The water cooled flat 4s (wasserboxer) have lots of problems, they run nice and smooth, but they are prone to head gasket leaks (aka wasserleaker or pisserleaker) and are very costly to repair. Head gasket kits cost about $200 per side and consist of 2 steel rings and 4 large "O" rings (one for each end of the cast iron wet sleaves) and the head to waterjacket gasket (and a few other odds and ends gaskets).
The diesels are reliable but way under powered..... like 55 hp to move a 5000+ pound brick shaped van (I think that they almost qualify for the orange triangle plate).
FYI all Vanagon Westfaila campers are Wolfsburg editions.

and with your generator that you plan on building, no one will ever be able to track the extra electricity that you are using on lights and it would be mobile so if anyone catches on, just relocate.

I was talking about growing Geraniums and Daffodils, dude... :?

Anyway, speed... I have driven a diesel westy... HORRRRRIBLY slow. I honestly think they are the slowest vehicles on the fact of the earth. The flat 4 air cooled in the westy is slower than a 1.6 diesel jetta, so I can only imagine how horrible it would be to drive a diesel westy around for your daily driver...

lol.

I was talking about ***** trees. I guess we weren't really on the same page at all.

I've never even been in a diesel VW so I have no idea how slow you mean, but I can defintly imagine....

It's a VW, you should only grow daisys in them.

A diesel westy is a perfect canidate for an I4 conversion. An 8 valve CIS or digifant will bolt right in, all you'll need to do is put the diesel oil pan and pump on it, wire it up, and build an exhaust (some will use the diesel manifold and exhaust pipes, but it looks like a lot of restriction to me).
the reason for using the diesel pan/pump is the engine will mount at 55 degres not the 15 degres that they sit in the golf/jetta
I had to buy all the diesel mounts, oil pan/pump, clutch, starter, input shaft,.......ect... to put in my 1.8 digifantII.

Wait, hold on, is there some kind of drug referencing going on? There could be kids reading this forum and then... they would be all like "Oh, I want an ***** TREE mom" and the mom would freak out, and be like "WHERE DID YOU HERE ABOUT THOSE?" and stuff.... and yea.... I'm so bored.....
