ok i want to put a rear factory spoiler on my 8v gli but i seem to remember
mounting holes on the trunk lids that came with spoilers.
what i need to know is will i have to get a whole new trunk lid for it to fit properly ? should i drill mounting holes, (the thought of that scares me lol) or is it possible to use adhesive to mount it ? and if so what adhesive to use ?
i found a nice one but i want to be sure before i spend my minimal cash supply on it.
THANKS GUYS !

You can drill holes... Just make sure that you use epoxy or silicone to seal the edges around that to prevent rust. If you went the adhesive route, I'd be weary of the thing falling off at high speeds... If you really wanted to use adhesive, then use double sided 3M tape.. They sell that at home depot.

drill it, bolt it... do it right... like diesel said, sticking it on will only end up with it peeling off eventually... ghetto!

When i put on my spoiler i had to drill holes, and i only out bolts on 2 of the 4. The spoiler was still verymuch shaky after putting all 4 on it was tight and amazing...

I also put double sided tape on the mounts of the spoiler so it wouldnt dent the trunk. so a nice combo of both works best!

awesome thanks guys! i was afraid of the same thing(falling off at high speeds)
im definatly going to drill and mount with silicone !
sonjay when you put yours on did you make a template for the drilling ?
or did you eyeball it? im for sure gonna make template for this one, i cant afford to FU** it up.
also what size drill bit did you use ?

i made a lil template, the spoler had the mounting screws sticking out right? so i layed it over the exact points and made lil dots where to drill and where the screw would come into my trunk. And drilling size i simply compared it to the spoilers screws that were gonna go through and made the same size.

happy to answer anymore questions... :D

I am assuming that there are bolts coming out of the spoiler that go into the trunk. If this is the case, I would recommend grabbing a drill bit that is about as small as possible (like 1/16 of an inch). Drill a pilot hole in the trunk in the center of where the bolt goes. This is to avoid having the big drill bit slip out from you and scrath your paint. There is less chance of this with a small SHARP bit. Once you get your pilot holes drilled, get a bit that is just a little bit bigger then the bolts. Drill the pilot holes to that size. place your spoiler on there and make sure it fits. If not, either get a bigger bit, or swivle the drill bit around in the hole when you are drilling. Once it fits on there, put a very small bead of silicon on the bottom of the spoiler (the part that will be making contact with the trunk). This is to prevent water from getting in your trunk. You may want to even put the silicon on a peice of paper, and then use your fingers to spread a VERY thin layer around the center of the spoiler. Don't put it close to the edges or it will seep out to where you can see it. If this happens, wipe it up with a cloth after you have tighten the spoiler down. Chances are, some will seep out when you tighten it down anyways. Hold the spoiler in place with your hand and open your trunk. You will want to use washers and nuts to attatch the spoiler, otherwise you may damage your trunk (if you only use nuts). Tighten them up to whatever torque you feel comfortable at. Check the base of the spoiler to make sure there is no silicon there. You are now good to go.

Before you drill anything, look inside your trunk and make sure the bolts will come through the trunk in an area where you can attatch a washer and bolt.
Silicon usually takes around 8 hours to dry. I would recommend using clear silicon, not chaulk.

Don't forget to make a DIY. :D

Oh yeah, I have never done this before, so you may have to use your best judgement in some places. This is just how I would do it.

You wouldn't be able to attach it with that 3M crap anyways.. Unless you cut off the studs coming out of the spoiler..

Mark it well.. Remember to angle it straight up before marking it.. Easy to miscalculate and make it not fit right..

The way the spoiler is made you dont need to seal it with anything (if its mounted correctly).. It's not that big of a deal if it's off a little.. It still looks good...

well guys my spoiler is on its way. im thinking of getting it painted , but as i seem to remember the 16v spoilers are soft , is it possible to paint it and have it last some what? i dont mind repainting it every so often. but im worried about thermal expansion cracking the paint.
any suggestions ?
thanks

If you take it to any garage that paints cars I am pretty sure they will know what to use. If not, try a local paint shop. Those guys tend to know what they are talking about.

I can't wait to see updated pics :D

Its not a real GLi if it doesnt have the spolier already... maybe its a carrat... i say just try and find the whole trunk lid... there is a very rare -and i have one- hella spoiler...!
