Hi. I want to replace the front lights on my MK4 with hid/xenon bulbs. However, the mk4's have daytime running lights and may overuse the hid/xenon bulbs. Is there anyway around this? Or will I have to start using hid/xenon bulbs in the daytime as well? :?

first question you have to answer is, are you referring to REAL xenon bulbs (with ballasts): http://www.coolbulbs.com/HIDKits_body.asp

or are you just wanting to get blue tinted halogen bulbs that look like "xenon"? like these: http://www.coolbulbs.com/bulbsbody.asp

I know that if you clip a certain wire or something they wont come on but I dont remember the details just remember reading about it.

get a european headlight switch, that will disable the DRLs...

you are aware that you will have no HI-beams once u put in xenon bulbs?

Pull your e-brake up one click and they'll turn off.

Hi-beams will be gone? How come?

because a 9007 bulb has the low and hi filaments in one housing... this is impossible with an HID bulb... if you want hi-beams you will need to get a 'BI-XENON' style bulb: http://www.hidkits.com/whats_new.htm

you might want to do some more research before diving into this expensive upgrade...

Pull your e-brake up one click and they'll turn off.

this is ok on a mk2 with sloppy cables... but on a mk4, one click up will lightly drag the parking brake... you don't want that

Couldn't you just bi-pass the switch under the E-brake?

If you end up getting these and want a Euro switch, www.concept1.ca would be the best place to get them. They got a bunch in that didn't have the easy removal clip so they are selling them for cheaper.

What about those bulbs they are selling around for $30-40? There are some made by Sylvannia, Philips, etc and they claim that their bulbs are HID (or near HID). In addition, they also state that they are 50 state legal and DOT approved. Are these also effective to use? Has anyone used these?

they are fine, slightly brighter than stock, a whiter look when lit and completely legal compared to all those very blue tinted bulbs that are illegal and provide LESS light than stock bulbs...

Are they really much brighter than stock? Is there definitely a good contrast aside from the color?

ive only ever seen the silverstars in a friends WRX and they did look different, cast a little more light, but I really couldn't justify their price, especially in my crappy mk2 headlights... i bought the Sylvania Cool Blue's since they were half the price of the silverstars:
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/AutomotiveLighting/HighPerformance/CoolBlue/
im happy with them, decent white light, a tinge of blue when they are coming at you from down the road (had a friend drive the car towards me from way down a city street)... they are so far the best 9004 bulbs ive tried in my jetta, and they'll be the last since i hope to upgrade to H4s someday...

What exactly are H4s?

What exactly are H4s?

H4's are just bulbs: http://shop.sportruck.com/lights/bulbs
they are similar to 9004 bulbs in that they are dual filament (lo/hi beam in one)... all european mk2 headlights came with H4's, so upgrading to any sort of euro-spec headlight (ecode aeros, 7" rounds, etc) means you will end up using H4s

With the sylvannia bulbs, what is their expected lifespan?

All those lights are very misleading. Xenon is a gas, much like the gas in halogeon lights, but it reacts differently to an electric current.

"Xenon" is not blue tint on a halogeon bulb. I had sylvania silver stars on my 91 diesel jetta (pictured at the left). They were considerably whiter than halogeon, and a little bit brighter.

I think there are companies making halogeon projection lenses... Projection is where it's at. You could always go true HID, but man... I'm not sure if it's worth it yet. Maybe give it a few years.

If you bought an after market headlight case that is labeled projectors, and bought some HID/XENON lights, would you think those would work? Like the cases they sell on Ebay all the time...

That would be a great solution yes.

Check out these guys, http://www.vvme.com/ I have bought several kits from them. They offer the Bi Xenon kits so you will still have the hi/lo beams required.

What are you refering to here?

saf26

I'm referring to being able to put an HID conversion in those projecters you can get off ebay. Some one told me it wont work, and you have to retrofit? I dunno, just wonderin.

zukgod1
01-23-2008, 08:55 AM
Ah ok, I do not see why you wouldn't be able to. the Xenon bulbs are suppose to produce less heat than a reg halogen bulb so if the bulbs required for the projectors are available go for it.

I just received 3 more sets yesterday, 2 for a friend in Seattle and one for my mk2 I'm building. New E Codes showed as well.

No... mine is the Jetta GL... :-(

zukgod1
01-23-2008, 04:09 PM
Want some? You will need the dash switch and harness..

I have some clean ones with HID's installed in them already.
I was going to use the bulbs for my mk2 as the back of the fog is the same as the mk3 fogs but I still dont have the fogs for the mk2 so these are sitting here doing nothing. Removed them from the mk3 last weekend.
