--- Got home from work today with a UPS sticker on the door stating they left my package at the office. I run down there and it was the Techtonics Chip! I ordered it tuesday afternoon, and got it today. UPS ground must haul ass from Oregon to Utah.
--- Anyhow, once I got the chip and instructions out of the box I realised that I needed a Torx 10 screwdriver. After a quick trip down to Lowe's, I popped the hood and yanked the ECU out from under the raintray. After removing the support bracket, I undid the four Torx screws and carefully pulled the module out from the plastic enclosure it resides in. Making sure that my left hand was on the metal chassis for the module for grounding purposes, I gently pulled out the old eprom. Then, I attempted to insert the chip into it's socket, and realised that the pins coming out of the chip were too wide from side to side. After gently using a wooden ruler I bent them to the proper angle to fit. I fit the pins carefully into the socket holes, and then pressed down until it was tight. I buttoned everthing back up and reinstalled the ECU in the car.
--- After all of that, I started the car (two seconds of cranking and she fired up) and let the car idle for about fifteen minutes, basically letting the engine run through two fan cycles. This apparently resets the ECU after being removed from the car or modded.
--- Once out on the main road, I let her rip. Tires spun in first gear, and then engaging second and slamming the gas, tires spun again until I let off the gas pedal. (It has been raining like crazy here in Salt Lake, and that doesn't help at all)
--- I noticed the improved throttle response and slight increase in HP and TQ right of the bat. The car seems like it wants to get to 60 in a big hurry. Tested out the rev limiter on the freeway, got all the way to 67 miles an hour in second gear before shifting to third.
--- Took the car up Parley's Canyon. This is my testing ground after doing mods. There is a steep section from Lamb's canyon that is fairly straight, uphill. When I had the 8V in it's prime, I reached about 85 miles an hour in fourth gear and then she would go no more. After the VR conversion was completed, I reached 98 miles an hour when the original chip shut down the motor at the rev limit. Tonight I reached a record speed of 104 miles per hour. This proves that the Techtonics chip did it's job.
--- I did not get a chance to test out the top speed governor being eliminated, only got to about 115 MPH on I-15 in somewhat busy traffic. Too many cars, wet roads and the fear of being thrown in jail held me back. Sounds like another visit to Spanish Fork is needed or another Wendover road trip.
--- Just driving around town with this chip is much more enjoyable, and freeway driving from 80 to 110 mph is a blast. The car seems to respond and pull harder.
--- I think this was a good investment for $100.00. 8)

Sweet, I wish my deliveries got here that fast...
I ordered my Injen intake on wednesday of last week, and it's not scheduled for delivery until this upcoming TUESDAY... ridiculous...
Sounds like a sound $100.00 investment though :), I might chip my car later :D

--- I'd say do it for sure. You get a gain of about 8-10 hp at the crank for only $100 bucks, if you were to do a camshaft you would get similar results but end up probably spending $400.00 plus.
--- Another thing I need to mention about the chip is that it cuts off the fuel supply to the motor when decelerating. (Gas pedal not stepped on) I am stoked about this because may exhaust is basically straight though. Before the chip when slowing down with my foot off of the gas the car would pop with excessing backpressure noise, now it is quiet. I don't sound like a Camaro or Mustang with Glasspacks anymore when I slow down!

Yea, speaking of that, what's the redline change? It might be different in my 2.0 though...
Oh, also, if I were to get a turbo, would I hafta reprogram the chip?
Oh, and one more thing, lol, I actually couldn't find my chip the other day, I was looking for the number... can someone tell me where it is? I feel so pathetic...

Dave it's interesting that you mention that, I found one off of an '89 GLi that had the 160 MPH speedo and the 8000 rpm tach. Then I was distraught when I noticed that 85-89 Jetta's and Golf's have two harness terminal connection points on the cluster. Late '89 through 92 only have one. So I need to find at least a 140 MPH speedo for that vintage of car soon. I ended up selling the instrument cluster on EBay for $100.00.

If you turbo the car eventually the kit you buy generally includes a special chip. If you look under your raintray you will see the ECU. Look for this number on the ECU: 037 906 259-- The dashes should be represented by a letter or letters. This is the number code that many chip places will want when you order. This is assuming that your 97' Trek is a 2.0. Techtonics will program the chip to your liking. I requested that my rev limiter be raised 600 rpm's to 7100 rpm.
Here is the link for the chip for your car on Techtonic's website:

Wow, 600 RPMs? That's impressive. Could I get new gauges to reflect that and have them calibrated? how much you think that would cost?

I am not sure about the gauges. Doesn't the 2.0L redline around 6500 rpms? If I remember right the tach on the 2.0L should go up to around 7000.

Actually 2.0s redline at 6200 :( but the tach goes up to 7000 I believe... so maybe I could ask for like a 500 rpm raise?

I don't think that would be a problem. If you have a custom intake and exhaust these chips really seem to work well with them.

mine goes all the way to 7000 before the limiter hits. but theres not really any reason to rev it that high normally

Wow, maybe I should add a performance chip to my shopping list for Christmas  . What about those chips and sensors I keep seeing on ebaymotors? Most them average at around $30-50 and claim around gains of 20hp and higher. Have any of you guys used them?
MKIIVR6
10-23-2004, 09:42 PM
I would not trust anything chip wise from ebay. A lot of seller's sell the performance module which is a 3 cent resistor that you run inline with your ECU harness. All these things do is send a faulty reading to the ECU to make it "think" that ambient and motor temps are a lot lower. Basically this changes the fuel mixture giving your car maybe 3-5 hp. However, this can cause a failed emissions test, burn out your catalytic converter, and make your gas mileage go up. I wouldn't recommend using one. Go with one of the reputed companies products, you'll be happy in the long run.

But even if these chips do add lots of power on to any car, doesnt gas mileage decrease a bit? Im planning to buy some parts this x-mas so my jetta will be a bit more gas efficient. What mods do you guys specifically recommend for saving more gas? :?

I got a chance to stretch the VR's legs over the weekend, a little. The highways were more clear, got her up to 125 mph where the speedo needle stopped and would go no further. The speedo is designed for 120, so once the needle reached it's max I had no idea how fast it got up to. Next time I will use my GPS unit as it should be able to give me the actual reading. I wish there was an oval track close by that I could test the car out on, I live in the contant fear of getting nailed by the cops. IIRC they throw you in jail here if you are over 100 or something like that. That would be bad. :x
