I can't figure this out. While driving, if I shift too quickly into 2nd gear, it kind of grinds, but it's more like a big thunk, but metal on metal... it's kinda hard to explain. Anyways, it only happens in 2nd gear, but I noticed shifting to any other gear is also becoming more and more difficult... this can't be good...

well 2nd gear is always the frist to go, and VW's have problems with 2nd so ive heard, but check if you clutch is fully dissengaging, and or try making sure the clucth is all the waydown then shift fast and hard and see if it still does it. other wise yoru linkage could be hitting somthing and or binding up. but it could be yuour syncros if its grinding from the tranny. also checkyour tanny fluid, it could be causing hard shifting.

I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch, I adjusted my seat even to make sure I was engaging it all the way. I'll check my tranny fluid I suppose, see what that tells me.

Even though the clutch pedal may be going to the floor, that doesn't mean the clutch is fully disengaged. There may be too much slack in the cable. You should probably check that out.

I am not sure if it is the same on your car, but it should be. When you look at your engine from the front of your car, you'll see the tranny on the right. There should be a horizontal bar on the very front of the tranny. That bar should be attatched to a cable that runs through your firewall. That's the clutch cable. Maybe some one with a A3 bentley can tell you how to check and adjsut it.

Yes Check this cable!
one time i was comming home and my clutch pedal fell to the ground 8O yes i know very scary!!
turns out the clutch cable had snapped some how, anyways ogt a new one put it but its a manual adjustment, the old one was automatic adjustment  anyhow check that along with tranny fluid, also how old are your bushings and linkage rods, this can cause probs with shifting as well. Or maybe your clutch is slipping solution = new CLUTCH
hope this helps

A3's have hydralic clutches.

A3's have hydralic clutches.
I kind of figured they would have been upgraded. Is there a chance there could be a leak in the hydrolic system or something like that?

ahhh there could be a leak but it would be bad bynow. the slave cylinder could be going bad, have that checked.`

2nd gear synchro is starting to go bad. When I had the 8 valve trans in my car it did the same thing. Instead of doing a trans rebuild for around $1000, get some GM Syncromesh trans fluid and swap it for the stuff that is in there now. It drastically reduces the grind, and also will help with shifting in all gears. This stuff is a little more expensive, but you can get away with spending $20 for the trans fluid it sure beats spending a grand.

should be like a oil plug on your tranny.

What ever you do when refilling the fluid DO NOT pour it in the bell housing on the tranny where the timing light hole is. I've seen a few people do that and the end result is usually a new clutch.
that part of a post by 92vr6 got moved...

AutoZone was out of stock on that stuff, so I'll get some this weekend, but I'm gonna take a pic of where I think I should pour it in, just to make sure, lol

wtf... gotta fix that..
Edit: can't seem to fix it... oh well, basically it's this:
Mobil 1 75W-90 (what the guy told me I needed)
Synthetic Gear Lubricant

I have no idea what that is... 92vr6 said get syncromesh, and that's what I asked for, and that's what the guy pointed out for me..

ok all VW's to my knowledge have a hypoid tranny. a hypoid gear is a gear with teeth very close togeather more so then normal. for better accelleration or some stuff. but they require special oil. syncromesh is hypoid oil just the best you can buy. well not the best but preatty damn good.

my recommendation is Redline tranny fluid... im running MT-90, my 1986 9A shifts like butter...
oh and easiest place to pour in the fluid, speedo cable hole, unbolt the cable base and pull it out, fill er up, 2 litres if the tranny is completely empty

you don't want to use the Mobil 1 in your tranny... its meant for differentials

well GM makes syncromesh so your best bet to find it is a GM dealer but it might cost more.
