I got my red powdercoated intake manifolds for my 2.0 today, and I went to install them, and I'm taking all the bolts out, when I notice something.

The new intake manifold that I bought has an extra hole in the side, and I'm not sure what goes there, maybe an O2 sensor. Either way, this is not in mine... The guy said it was an OBD II manifold, and my car is a 97... Someone help! Is it possible to just plug this whole? agh...

I am pretty sure you can just plug it, just make sure whatever you use it won't break off and destroy your engine. I dont know for sure but I don't see why not.

LOL are those converse's I see?

Heck yea they are, I have 3 pairs.

But anyways, you think I can just plug it, I noticed there are two other little wholes there too... this is a nightmare... maybe it's for an o2 sensor? I'm not sure where those mount. Someone help, heh

just plug it... find a bolt that will thread into it nice and tight, put some gasket goo on it too just for good measure... since your car didn't have anything there, it still doesnt need anything there...

and no its not for an o2 sensor, they are only for sniffing exhaust gases...

Plug them with oil plugs.

I see no reason why you can't plug those holes up, as long as there is a hole for all the sensors you have now you should be fine. But I am not an expert so wait for someone else to confirm or not.

Edit Looks like 2 people confirmed it while I was typing this....

Converse rocks. Vintage 2004? lol

I just looked up the part schematic for that intake. That hole is for emissions, it can be plugged or the adaptor could be installed. I'm not sure what the adaptor is, however I doubt it's an O2 sensor. The plug part number is: 902 889 01 make sure you use a washer with it. It's exact measurments are M14x1,5x16.

If your old one didn't have anything there, don't worry about it, just plug it up.

Hope this helps

Is that a VW plug?

My mom will be home shortly, and she's a metal scuptist.
I couldn't find the exact size I wanted, I found a longer one that's not threaded all the way to the head. My mom can cut it though, and weld the head back onto the bolt. Then, using rubber washers, I can bolt it on, sealing the hole. But if I can just get that part from VW.... maybe I'll hold off till tomorrow when they open.

Edit: I HAVE installed the lower manifold though, and I have a feeling that was harder than the upper will be. It was cool, I've never actually seen my pistons before lol

Yes that's the VW part number, it shouldn't be more than $2-3, but if your mom can cut fabricate it that should do the trick. The intake is only sucking are and there are no moving parts inside to be concerned about, I still wouldn't go any deeper than spec just as to not restrict airflow. I believe the intake you have may be for CA emissions, I'm not sure though.

I think I'll just put my old manifold back on, and go to VW tomorrow. I'd rather have the correct part. Also, it looks like I hurt a few small hoses on the side, the were brittle. I can still connect them, but I'm going to need to replace those anyways, so a trip to the dealer is in store anyways.

If they are small rubber hoses, you may be able to pick them up cheaper at a place like Advance or Autozone for cheaper. You'll have to cut them to length, just take a piece along to the store to match the inside diameter so you get the right stuff. I just replaced all my hoses for cheap and it comes in about 3 ft length so you'll have some to spare later. Less than $5 a roll.

If you can find a way to plug that thing you should be ok. O2 sensors are located in the exhaust system, be it the ex. manifold, downpipe or catalytic converter. They measure exhaust gases and send the signal back to the ECU for the data it needs. But like mentioned above, plug it and make sure that the engine vacuum doesn't suck in whatever you put in there. Make sure if possible that air doesn't leak past the plug either, or the car could run like crap.

They seem kinda like rubber hoses, but have a kind of fabric on the outside of them, like mesh or something...

When I get back from going out tonight, I'll post pics of what I'm talking about.

Yes stock had the fabric sleeve, it's ok to use the plain rubber hose. I've used them for years and never was given a problem out of them. Let me know how you make out.

If you are getting wires/hoses that are not OEM, make sure that they can handle the pressure, heat etc that the OEM ones are designed for.

Well... apparently that part number is actually the oil drain plug... they don't make a plug for this...

I'm going to see if I can find a better bolt, if not I'll have my mom make one. But I'll do that tomorrow, I have plans tonight :)

Make sure to get us some pictures of when it is installed. That is going to look sweet

Maybe the oil drain plug is a perfect fit?

No, the oil drain is 12 mm, while a 3/4 inch bolt amazingly fits perfectly into the whole in my manifold...

Is there any HP gains from this? or just for show?

Actually I noticed after putting in the lower one, I got maybe 1-2 hp.. sad I can feel that. But I think it's just cause my old one has a lot of gunk in it.

what ever you use to plug it, i would also use gasget sealer as well just in case.

Good call on the DIY, that would be sweet.

I defintly agree with JettaDude. Some sealer in there could only help.
