What is funny is that most of the VW car line names are after wind or sea type ideas. Except for some, of course.

Jetta: Gulf wind?
Passat: Another wind of some sort and named after a German battleship?
Golf: Golf
Vanagon: Vans that are gone.
Touareg: who the hell knows
Phaeton: A ghost?
Rabbit: Some animal that is supposed to be fast.
Corrado: ?
Scirroco: ?
Quantum: ?
R32: Rhienmotor 3.2 liter

Or maybe I am just talking out of my arse............

I'm a tech for Comcast, and about six months ago I was assigned a job for repairing a customers phone system and wiring in his house. When I got there and started walking through his house to troubleshoot, I kept noticing shwaztica symbols engraved on small gold plaques all over the place. I didn't say anything, but when another tech came over to give me a hand he asked the customer what they were for. (Chris, the other tech is Puerto Rican) The customer, who looked to be of Arabic descent, explained that they were a symbol of peace from his country. I got nervous about asking the customer what they were for because who the heck knows if the guy is going to get offended or not.

I actually think that man was probably of east indian decent as they had the swastica there, that's where the Nazis stole it from. It's also part of the buddha religion so in Japan/China right now the 'cool thing' is having swasticas on your jacket.

History Leason...(just informational, I'm not trying to be a know it all here"

Porsche was hired by the administration under Hitler to make a "Peoples Car", and in 1936 one of several prototypes was introduced and accepted. You see, Hitler wanted a radio for for every German family (apparently so everyone would be forced to listen to his political propaganda) and an affordable car or tractor. Hitler got the car through Professor Porsche's VW30 prototype. The Third Reich selected a location to build the factory northeast of Hanover. Die Autostadt was born which later became called "Wolfsburg", the company is still headquartered there today.

The government gave the car a propaganda-oriented name, the "KdF" - short for Kraft durch Freude ("strength through joy"), the recreation arm of the workers' Labor Front. Refinements to the car were undertaken. Production started but was quickly switched over to the Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen (a "jeep" and its amphibious counterpart) for the suddenly escalating World War II. In 1944, allied bombing destroyed over half of the plant. Only because two huge electricity-producing turbines were unscathed did the British rebuild the plant and restart production of the Volkswagen after the War.

It wouldn't be until the late '50's that the VW Type 1 would make it to American soil. Understandably, the car was not well received by those post war generation. The '60's saw a revolution in the peace movement, and the cost of a Bug was so cheap, hippies and college students could afford the car and keep them running at a low cost including fuel consumption.

I'm no expert by any means, just a wealth of useless knowledge. I am thankful for one thing, they didn't blow up the whole factory and the Brits had the sense to start it back up.

Enough of my ramblings, I'm off to bed!

It's a good thing the British didn't mess up the VW. Like their crazy backwards wiring system, where the body is + and the wires are -. I hear it is a real mess.

Scirocco - also refers to wind... a hot wind

Touareg - derived from a nomadic tribe in the Sahara

Phaeton - name given to horse-drawn carriages in the 17 and 1800s... is the name of the son of *****s from Greek mythology

those are ones i know off the top of my head...

This doesn't even touch those European names that never made it to North America. Polo (golf), Bora (jetta), etc...

the Polo isn't a Golf, may be some shared bits but the Polo shares its current platform with the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia...

don't forget Vento and Lupo :D
