Okay, here's the deal. I have a '97 Jetta GL that grew up in the North East with the harsh winters but is now fairing better in the California climes.
It runs well, no major problems EXCEPT dodgy transmission (I didn't realise I would ever have to service a sealed auto transmission) that has gotten better since a full flush and fluid replacement about nine months ago. Some bodywork stuff needed, and maybe a valve misfiring that needs taken care of (rumbling offbeat sometimes in idle, but no C/E light).
With a 135k on it, I reckon it's worth $3.5k at the most just now; but who'd want to take on a jerky transmission?
Anyway, the real question is; should I sell and cut losses before other parts eat up money and possibly the tranny sh1ts it also? Will it be worth investing what I see as another grand or two at least this year to keep up?
I like the car, my first and only but I am bored with driving around a basic Jetta that might just keep sucking up moolah as the years go on, especially if that could be a car loan payment instead.
However, I drive about 100 miles a day for work and I'd end up wearing down a new car fairly quickly (minus the things I've learned). I'm looking at this more from an investment standpoint...
Thoughts?
