View Full Version : What do you think of this?

Sorry, no pic to show (yet), but I stopped by the car dealership by my house today and checked out this 91 Jetta Wolfsburg there and talked to one of the salesmen about it.

He said it was driven by a young couple who travelled around a lot in Northern British Columbia (where I am). It's got:

- 300,000km+ (around 180,000 miles)
- Small bit of rust on the front of the hood
- Leather interior (ripped)
- Might have some mechanical issues

That's all I got from it, but it looks like if it was cleaned up a bit on the outside, maybe re-paint the hood and some interior work (sewing up the rip in the back seat etc) it could be a decent car.

The salesman said about $1000 Canadian ($800US) would be what it's worth, but I'm sure if I sent my dad down there in my place he could get it for under $800 Canadian (everyone tries to rip off us teenagers).

So anyways, that's all I know about it, what do you guys think of that?

EDIT: I know a thing or two about exterior work and I'd be decent with the interior, my dad is excellent with mechanics if that makes any difference. The salesman said 'If you don't know anything about mechanics I wouldn't advise this car' or something.

i think not to bad i pd 800 for my 87 gli with150,000 on it
but they thought it had a major oil leak.
LOL i looked and the valve cover was loose
but i love my gli and a 91 for 800 us is not a bad price at all.at least as long as their is nothing majorly wrong with it
id love to see some pics.

Keep in mind this car is really dirty, it'll look much better if they actually washed it and got rid of the stickers.

Back end is a bit rusted where the license plate is.

Doesn't look tooo bad.

Rust on the end of the hood.

Interior looks pretty nice.

Nice backseat ;) ;)

Flash brought out all the gruesome detail, rusty wheels and still dirty.

I'm seriously thinking about this though because I actually have $1,000 right now. By winter I may even have enough money to sell this and get something nicer, but I want a car I can work on and make it my own, plus it'd be my first car and I really, really need something to take to school because my friend is pretty unreliable for rides.

umm, thats not a 91... its an 87... looks to be a GLI judging by the red trim on the bumpers, the bolstered grey leather seats and lip spoiler... to know for sure if its a GLI, check and see if it has a dual downpipe and a rear anti-roll bar... i would suggest you pay alot less than 1000 for it!

try to take 200 off of it.

I would say offer them $500 (USD) and I would bet they sell it. If the chassis is not rusted, the car has potential. 8)

I don't know where I got 91 from, I thought it said it somewhere... oh well, yeah, it looks more like an 87. I'm going back there tomorrow after I go out to see my parents at their campsite.

And yeah, I'll def offer them less. My friend got his 86 or 84 (forgot which) for $700 Canadian so I'll try to get it lower. And yes, It's a GLI.

Nice looking interior, but it looks like the exterior is gonna need some work, heh

^ Actually the exterior is great except for the rust on the front/back. Like I said, the car is very dirty and the flash brought out all sorts of unwanted detail. Everything looks better in normal daylight.

My neighbor works at a body shop so if I had the money to get it painted or just get the hood painted he could give me a pretty good deal on it.

and whats the deal with the ghetto steel wheels? GLI's came with 14" alloys... did they get stolen somewhere in the cars life... :?

Try and let them let you take it to a garage that you trust to have a mechanic look over it. That way you will know about how much you will have to put into the car to get it on the road, which will give you more barganing power as well.

^ I think it'll run fine for just every day driving, but I WILL have to get some work done to it before I take it up the ski hill in the winter. But, my reassurance is that my friend has some like $400 CDN old Pontiac Firefly that she took up the ski hill 3 times a week and it didn't die.

I'm going to take some photos of it again today before I leave town and maybe on Tuesday, if I can, I'll get down there and get them to open it up and start it up and such.

And yeah, in the summer some nicer rims will be going on there :P

Here's a pic from during the day, it's really not as bad as it looks, but as soon as I get it (if I do) I'm gonna sand & repaint that hood and clean it up. Still a beater, but I can't afford anything more :( After this I'm going to buy a couple things for my camera and then nearly all of my money is going towards going to University... ugh.

It looks pretty good. Are you doing the painting or a shop?

SteveXs2
10-11-2004, 06:17 PM
I'd do the painting.... 8O

I kind of want this car for the sole purpose that I'll have something to work on, fix it up, rather than save my money for another couple months and buy something that doesn't really need any work.

burn_your_money

you should buy my car then. Only 250$ CND and all the work you could possibly want and then more. :D

Do you know if the older VWs had lead in their paint?

Hehe, don't forget, i'm mechanically retarded, i plan to learn with this car.

Thats what I did with my Jetta. Spent at least 600 on tools, ripped the thing apart and leraned a pile. Never really fixed anything on it but it's up far sale :D

No, that's an 87. The grille was changed in the GLI's in 1988.
