Well tonight I went to look at a new car for myself :D

Actually it's far from new, but thats ok. I don't know what year it is, I forgot to ask but it is a rabbit so that's all that matters. And it's diesel :D

OK, here's the goods

- 145 k kms, original motor
- 4 spd manual tranny
- good struts
- decent interior with exception of dash and headliner (I'll get to that)
- rabbit
- Diesel
- 2 new tires, 2 decent tires
- certified last spring
- 2 door
Now for the bad
- decent amount of rust (my friend can do body work so it's not too big of a deal)
- burst brake line
- It took a while to start up, but the glows weren't pre heated and it had been sitting for a week
- No headliner
- No stereo
- driver seat won't fold down (I actually broke the handle off it but thats ok)
- shifter linkage is a mess (a hastle to get in 1st gear)
- just about everything electical has been jimmy-rigged. The glow plugs work off a push button under the steering wheel, to turn on the fan you flip a switch where the stereo should be, same with interior heat, wipers and the horn doesn't work. To start the car, you turn the key to run and push a different button under the dash, LOL real hardcore.

I felt the oil and there it was black but silky smooth. Forgot to check the coolant resevoir, and the grey smoke went away after about 15 seconds. When you hammer on the diesel, there is a big burst of grey smoke and I saw a spart fly out.

I am going to take the car to my house this weekend and have a real good look at it, then if it is worth it I will take it to a mechanic to find out what it needs for a safety. Then I'll post what he says here and let you guys decide if it is worth it. He may also through in another diesel rabbit parts car for free. If he doesn't throw the other car in, the most I would pay is $500 (that is absolute tops and I would hate to do it but he is asking $700 for it OBO at buyers risk. CND of course.

So what do you guys think? I'll try and get some pics of it this weekend.

The CVs sounded ok, but I think a bearing in the rear is going to need to be replaced

Visually the whole car is a nightmare LOL. its not like rusted to nothing, but theres enough spots to notice
ohh, and there is no interior door handle to close the door, and you have to slam the door for it to stay closed (just new pins I hope)

700CAD?? that sounds rather high for a car that barely runs and will need alot of things fixed before its road worthy... and make sure you know what yur getting into, parts for rabbits are not as easy to come by as a mk2, nor are they as easy to work on as a mk2... I have alot alot of friends with mk1's and they both LOVE and HATE the car at the same time

I know how badly you would love to have a rabbit, but thats a poopy deal bro...

Rabbits can be found pretty cheao, mjaor problem is rust...

But that electrical job can run you alotta money...

My friend had a TJ and went off roading in it, and some water got into the dash. fryed all this stuff..

He didnt think it was such a big deal, costed him about $4000 to get it all fixed 8O 8O

There is nothing wrong with a project car, thats fun...

But it should be the lil things that need fixing...

700 is too much i agree. i dont know anything about a1s especially diesels
but you just dont want to find yourself back in the situation your in with the jetta. id say keep looking if he isnt willing to drasticly lower the price.

I guess I forgot to mention that he is throwing in another diesel rabbit that would run but all the electrical will need to be redone. With the exception of the somewhat long starting time, the car ran Excellent. 145 k kms on a diesel.. at worst I can swap it into a different car. I was thinking $500 for both would be a fair price?

At any rate, I am picking the car up saturday, having a really good look at it in my garage and then deciding if it's worth bringing to a mechanic to see what it will need for a safety.

Diesel is GOOD. I have a rabbit diesel sitting in my driveway that doesnt have a motor in it... You are welcome to the entire wire harness(less shipping).

That seems like a great deal if the motor runs good... don't forget to check the coolant bottle for oil!

Well the car is sitting in my garage right now. Everyting looks good on it. It might even be worth the full 700...

I am going to have a garage check it out and do a compression check then I will know for sure. What should the compression be?

I can't tell how long to hold the glow plug button for, the light on the dash has been bi-passed. I tried lisetening for a clicking sound from the plugs but I couldn't hear anything.

There are alot of deep (to the metal) scratches in it so it is going to rust out soon if it doesn't get painted. The interior is in terrible condition. there is lots of parts missing. If I had the time to fix it up and it was a bit cheaper it would be a really good deal.

I am going to try and get the other guy to bring the car to a shop to see what it needs for certification. He lives 6-8 hours away from me but he seems to think it is only 4 hours. He wanted 500 for the car, and he figrued it would cost him 200 to deliver it (because he thinks I am 4 hours away) so I said I would give him 600 delivered. If it wasn't for delivery I would be getting the car for 300 at his original 600 asking price. $600-$300 for deliver = $300 car. I think its an awesome deal. The only thing is he doesn't know how many Kms are on the car. The odomter broke at 150 k kms, and now there is a new cluster in there reading 400k kms so he is guessing the car has 200 k kms. It doesn't really matter because it is a diesel :twisted: . He said he would try and get pictures of it by the weekend so hopefully I can post some new pictures soon.

Well the guy is broke right now so he can't afford to take it toa shop to see what it needs for certification. Once I know what it needs I'll probably buy it. I may buy all 4 cars though, fix up and sell the first diesel I posted and part out the other 2.

I think I am going to offer the first guy 400 for his, but the one for 600 is firm because he is delivering it and it is a 6 hour drive. I might buy both cars and fix the first one (400) up and sell it for a pile more.
