Ok, I've finally given in... I'm going to mod my engine, the little weakling that it is...

Now I know this gets posted all the time, but I need to know what are the best mods for the money. I have 600 dollars left to work with, and then I'm nearly flat broke, so if something goes wrong I'll be really screwed, but I'll try to earn some income so I don't have to worry.

But anyways:

What should I buy for performance with 600 dollars?

k&n filter
cam
chip
header
short shifter
Those are pretty basic but they will give you some power.

Check these links out:

Neuspeed p-flow: This is a small hp mod, but it makes the car sound great.
http://neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=40|J3&type=11<ype=ns_euro&p_id=1055

Neuspeed Camshaft: An expensive harder-to do mod with only 5-7 hp gains.
http://neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=40|J3&type=11<ype=ns_euro&p_id=44

Neuspeed Chip: An easier mod for 5-7 hp gains, somewhat cheaper.
http://neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=40|J3&type=11<ype=ns_euro&p_id=97

Neuspeed Supercharger: Pain in the arse expesive mod, lots of hp gain.
http://neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=40|J3&type=11<ype=ns_euro&p_id=624

Techtonics cat-back exhaust: Somewhat pricey mod for 5-10 hp gains.
http://techtonicstuning.com/

Be careful though, cars are like women, once you mess with them you won't want to stop.

Supercharger is like 2 grand, did you miss the 600 dollar part? lol
Also, doesn't neuspeed claim 11 hp for their chip?

MKIIVR6
10-03-2004, 10:58 PM
They claim that but the increase is not extremely noticeable. The 11 hp is at the fly wheel, count on 5-7 at the wheels. Throttle response improves, and the rev limiter is higher as well as the top end governor eliminated. I would say intake, chip and exhaust would be in the works first, then go from there.

Ok, some guy is selling TT 268 cam, adj sprocket, dual valve springs, Valve Cover Gasket, Upper Intake Manifold Gasket, Lower Intake Manifold Gasket, cam bolt, and gasket ring

Apparently that's all I need, other than tools..

These are going for about 300, is that a good deal?

That's not too shabby of a price, if the engine has over 100k miles, I would recommend doing the lifters as well. Man, it's only 10:50 p.m. here in Utah!

GoodDayForADrive
10-03-2004, 11:54 PM
Yea, I have 110000 miles, what are lifters? :?

MKIIVR6

Hydraulic lifters that adjust valve height automatically running off of the camshaft lobes.

Am I gonna need any special tools for this stuff?

MKIIVR6

Don't believe so, except maybe a gear puller if you are planning on using an adjustable pulley. If you do this, swap out the timing belt while you're at it. Spending the extra $20 or so on this item will save hundreds later.

hmmm, ok

Another question, do you guys think it would look bad if I lowered the car on the stock wheels? I can't really afford to buy all new rims :\

yeah i think it woudl look great! 8) but dont do it the cheap way and cut the springs. BAD BAD BAD
and watchout on ebay for CHEAP SPRINGS they look good but are utter CRAP
go with a brand you know, autotech is good neuspeed, pick your poison
also springs are not to bad on the wallet as long as your not getting the struts and all too , a full adjusable height koni kit is like 12 hundred bucks. 8O

jettadude
10-04-2004, 01:35 PM
yes it is a bad indea to lower it on stock wheels unless you plan on keeping those wheels or unless you do a coil over suspention. becuase if you go bigger and low pros still make the wheel bigger there is a change of rubbing.

I think it depends on how big of a drop you do. If you slam the car with stock wheels, when/if you decide to get rims, you're going to run into probelms. If you only drop it a bit then when/if you get rims there shouldn't be a problem.

as for performance if you wanna go cheap, get a header!!!! then if it doesn't come with 1 a duel downtube, high flow cat, and catback. then work on intake. you will notice that. then from there do a cam, and chip, but when you do the cam you should do the entire vavle train. then after that work on heavier upgrades like ring and pinon/ new tranny with steeper gears. then work on turbo/ supercharger, or for that kind of money port and polish, or find a bigger thorttle body and injectors, or for about that same amount of money PUT IN A BIGGER ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol to make it short after you do all the work to the engine you should of just put in a bigger engine. so its your choice but if you do anything do ehxuast, FULL!! header will make the different and from there just add more ponys.

miamiDaveGLi
10-04-2004, 08:35 PM

I think this all comes down to these factors: All-go, no-show, or all-show-no go. I tend to be in the all-go no-show category. There is nothing better than pulling up to a light next to a honduh in an old vintage VW and then smoking them when the green light comes. At the next intersection there is usually the look of WTF? on the honduh driver's face.

I fall into the all show, no go category. I prefer fuel economy and a nice looking ride. Of course my opinion of a nice ride is a stock Rabbit, so I should have some money to dump into the engine if I ever get a car.

Have you thought about either supercharging or turbocharging your car? Those should satisfy your craving for power :D . In addition, its much more cost efficient than getting a new 1.8 or VR6 jetta. I know a friend who supercharged his 2.0, and now, he can even kill a vr6 on the straights!

And at the very least someone would key your car or throw a brick through your windsheild, or some chlorine*sp in the gas tank...

Dont get me wrong, Hondas are also good cars. I also have a 9 year old honda that still runs like it did when I first got it. The only problem is that, as my friend summarized, "many jackasses and wannabe-racing punks are driving hondas". :x

Another upgrade I can think for your need for more power is getting a particular car with another world-renowned 2.0 engine.......THE Mitsu EVO VIII. It also uses a 2.0 engine as the ones found in the jetta, but it can kill most cars on the road!
