View Full Version : My *insert curse words here* sunroof

I just wanted to vent my frustrations about my sunroof.
Here's the deal:

The sunroof tilts, but will not slide open.
I took it apart today, and for 3 hours tried to fix it.
What I found was that basically one side won't slide backwards or forwards (To keep it simple, hard to explain in text)

So I guess I hafta take it to the dealership...
Last time they told me it would cost 70 bucks just to look at it. Wel lnow I have my whole roof taken out, and I can take the whole sunroof out myself, as I did when I was trying to fix it. So I'm hoping that since I've done all the work for them, they will only charge me to fix it.

On a brighter note... at least I can recover my roof with some black fabric, now that it's out of the car...

If I was you I would try to find the slider and install it myself. Someone is always parting out a A3 on vortex. And at worst you could get the part from the dealership and install it yourself. It sounds like you know how to do it.

Just my $0.02

Interesting, but I don't remember seeing these "rocker springs" that he speaks of. Do you know where those are?

Ok, I was just discussing it with my dad, and he decided that I should check the cables like that guy said he did, without removing the whole assembly. Does anyone know how to do this? It's starting to get dark outside, so I'd have trouble checking it myself right now to see what he meant.

OMFG

I just went out to try and take the motor down to check the cables, and I stripped the fricken screw... I can only get one off now... *** I'm pissed.

To get that screw out you hve 2 options IMO.
One is to buy those screw remover things you see on tv
OR
take a drill and drill the head off the screw. The motor should come off now. Once it is off, take some vice grips and take the screw out using those.

yea watch your self with dealers, the prob with dealers is that if your car is modified it is worth nothing to them. they like stock cars because they can be ceritfied and what not. i was told this by a dealer, that if you want to get a good price for a trade in make sure the car is back to stock and youll get way more money then with alot of mods. even a supercharger and stuff, because in the dealers eyes that is just going to make it wear faster. so whatever you got take it off and watch what you get as well. i didn't read the whole post sorry just figered that i would throw that out there while on the topic of dealers. oh and sunroofs suck, i want one soo bad but there a pain .

Yeah... I was just telling Cory (92vr6jetta) that my coupe is lucky it's a coupe, because if it wasnt a coupe it would have been gone a long time ago, lol.... It's a beater. Anyway, another thing we were talking about is slipping a sheet of glass into the sunroof to do a moonroof conversion... While you have that all out you could cut out the metal... Ohhh wait, you have an mk3... NEVERMIND!!! LOL This is the most worthless post EVER.

Doesn't the Passat moonroof fit where the sunroof is on a A3??

I have heard that the relay has alot ot do with sunroof and window problems. That part is really expensive, too.

Well I brought it to the dealer... they now want 90 fricken dollars just to diagnose the problem. That's insane... I can order the parts from them to fix it, but since I'm not completely sure what the problem is, that could get expensive. I think I might just try to find someone parting out a jetta somewhere...
