Hmm, I have come to the conclusion that a 2.0 will never amount to much unless you poor tons of cash into it :( I am going to do a few apperance mods on my car then, when I get to the engine, what are some very cheap or even free things I can do to get a little more out of my 2.0?

well the 2.0 is a solid engine to work with... it will glady handle a turbo... but to start out, the cheapest, easiest mods are:
- K&N (or other equivalent) hi flow air filter for your airbox
- cam
- chip

then a little more up the price scale:
- cat back exhaust
- port and polish

and obviously keeping the engine tuned up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) and keeping it clean (throttle body etc) will go a long way to best performance.

Wow, neuspeed claims an 11 hp gain... that's pretty good.

Also, how hard are cams to install?

a cam isnt too bad... its alot easier on a 1.8 than it is on the crossflow 2.0L tho... you have to remove the intake manifold to get to the valve cover... just more to take apart... plus you should use an impact wrench to remove and reattach the cam sprocket from your stock cam to the new one... unless of course you buy a new sprocket (adjustable!) to go along with it :D

start searching the net... get some ideas on parts and prices, compare... are there any local tuner shops you can cross shop as well? you could even look for used stuff, theres always people selling cams and chips on vortex

is 97 OBDI or OBDII? if its OBDI you got the dual valve springs and you can go with a pretty good cam like a 266 or 272. Im running a 260 which is .432" lift on intake and exhaust. I have a MK4 2.0. If you plan to run boost dont go over a 260 which is why i got a 260 or you can get a 260/268 turbo cam. I bought a Techtonics cam.

cams wont give you much power. but if you mix cam with chip youll see better performance out of each then alone.l

Check out www.concept1.ca they have a really nice page explaining what each cam does. It's really brief but a good starting point.

Well, I put a x-flow in my car. I bought the motor on a whim(I figured there wasnt much to lose for 275) The 8v in my mk2 was dead and I needed a car to get to work and back. I was really surprised at how well the car GOES. I also recently installed a 272 cam and it pulls hard up to the limiter. Now keep in mind that this is in a mk2 and your car will never be as fast as mine as long as it stay NA. :D Good luck but my opinion is that in a mk3 or 4 you shouldnt even bother with NA if you wanna go fast. Too heavy.
