feul pump issues with my new truck

i just bought a 1980 rabbit pickup 1.6 cis 5 speed and drove it straight home when i pulled in to the drive way it sputterd out and would not start i found the fuel pump to be not working so i drained the 8 or 9 year old gas put in a new pump and stuck like 5 gallons of premium in it it ran about a mile and then sputterd out again, the fuel pump still sounds like its kicking on but its not as loud as it was when i first put it in and there doesent seem to be pressure getting to any thing because icracked a line are the feul pumps like super sensitive to bad gas or somthing also i found that the feul pump relay has been wired around directly to the key is it getting too much power or some thing mabye it shouldent be on all the time i still need to get a bently for the older rabbits any thing would be appreciated
