On my 96 Jetta Trek (manual tranny), both outter CVs have bad boots. Should I tear apart the shafts and repack all the CVs and install all new proper boots or should I just put on after market split boots that don't require removel of the shafts?
Keep in mind that I don't have alot of time to be doing alot of extra crap, I also need to take a looksee at the rear breaks, never touched them and it has over 140,000 miles on it. :?

Dude, don't bother with the drum brakes... Take that to a shop, it's more work than it's worth! Also, I would just do the split boots so you don't have to disassemble the whole dang drive train.

doing brakes more work than its worth? O_o
<- refuses to pay for anything that can be done by me or my father
that was one of the first things i did when i got my car lol
on the boots replace em with the split boots but dont be suprised if they start to click and die soon

split boots is what I was leaning towards, I was just wondering what everyone thought.
As for the brakes, I work at a shop and have access to all the tools needed, but the brakes I'm use to doing have drums bigger than my Jettas tires, and take 2 people to lift them on to the brake lathe.
Thanks

If you drove over the winter with bad boots, you will probably need new cv joints soon. The only reason for boots is to keep them clean and lubed. if your boots are torn, they are neither clean, nor well-lubed.
