Anybody else having problems with the cruise on their A3s? On my 96 Jetta (2.0l manual) it only works when it wants to, which isn't very often.
I've been told that VW had a problem with bad modules. I have two modules, if Iswitch them every now and then it will often work for a week or so.
I'm thinking of buying an aftermarket cruise, one that can use the speed sensor, and putting it in using my stock switches, servo and anything else I can.
Any thoughts?

Are they still run by vaccum pumps and diaphrams or do they fuction via electronic means now?

I assume you mean the after market? The cheaper ones use engine vaccum, and the more expensive ones use eletric servos. My Jetta uses an eletric vaccum pump w/vaccum servo.
The cheapest aftermarket cruise I've found is around $100, it uses engine vaccum and can use either an eletronic speed sensor or glueing magnets to the drive shaft (not something I would trust).
At the end of the month we're going to Tenn., I'm in Michigan, and it would be nice to take the Jetta (30+ mpg), but if the cruise isn't fixed we will take the Blazer (22 mpg max). The Jetta needs the cruise fixed and the Blazer needs an alternator, has a noisy, dry bearing, so I wouldn't trust it on a long trip. So it's sink money (that I don't have) in to one or the other before the trip. :?

here how to get CC cheap. you go to homedepo and get a piece of 2by4 and cut it so it will go from your seat to the pedal and push it down a bit. there ya go. all you go to do is swerve while trying to pull it out cause your going too fast. lol

Wonder why I never thought of that, I'll have to give it a try. If you never hear from me again, you'll know it didn't work.

In the A2's the peddal is engineered in such a way that you can actually wedge a brick or rock near the peddal for accurate cruise control.

Hate to say I know people who have done these ghetto rigged ways...My thoughts on cruise is the main vacume line or vacume pump/box are leaking. Those things are all in the drivers fender, I know because my car is dissmantled. The white hose I disconnected makes a lot of suction when the car is running, I assume that is the main line.

Already checked everything for leaks, besides it not acting like a leak, it either works or it doesn't, if it had a leak it would constantly slow down. I'm fairly certain it's a bad module, everything else checks out. Anyways, I'm leaning toward the 2x4 cruise control.

Whoa safety! First make sure the pump motor works, it's in the drivers fender, all black kinda obvious. Maybe corrosion on the contacts even.

LOL
I am I ever glad that I hate cruise control. It sounds like a major headache. My guess would be that there is a lose wire somewhere that sometimes makes contact, and sometimes doesn't. Maybe even the switch itself

Can't be union, it does work sometimes, just not very often.

FYI, my VR6's cruise control worked about 3 times out of the 20 that I tried to use it.
