View Full Version : holy exhaust
ok, so i just went to go grab some pizza for lunch, and my cars been sitting for about 3 hours. it's about 5 C outside, so i can see the blue smoke really easily when i start up my car. the wind is going perpindicular to my car, and when i start my car up, i see two trails of smoke. one from the back of my car, where it should be, and one from directly underneath my door....i figured that probably wasn't a good thing, and it would also explain why my car seemed slightly louder than usual.
i haven't checked it out yet, but is there anything i should know before i get it fixed? i've got a 1986 jetta coupe.....straight diesel, not turbo.

Yep! It's a hole or a crack in your exhaust, which would make your car seem louder and would explain the smoke from underneath... You will probably have to get a new exhaust unfortunately.

he said its a non turbo but your cat could of blown out. that is a possablity. but if you do have to change out a pipe if you want some more HP then just put on a new cat back with larger pipe and what not.

There is no cat on A2 diesels (with the exception of the 91 and 92 ecodiesels)... He's right, probably just a rusted out exhaust pipe or something... have somebody start the car up whilst you examine the exhaust system, determine where it's coming from.
i just propped up my car yesterday and took a little looksie.
turns out the exhaust pipe going from the engine to the first muffler is almost completely rusty. the rest is fine.
there were two dime size holes near where the pipe connected to the first muffler. i put some muffler tape over top of it and that worked great for one hour of driving, and then i guess it fell off.
is it possible to replace that pipe by myself?

If you know how to weld you can change the pipe....
If you dont know how and dont have the tools that is another story...
Buddy of mine just got his GTI done (piping), all stainless for $300 cash CDN (under the table no tax)...
So if you aer gona get it done, at a shop, thats a base price to start looking at.

WHATEVER!!! Most shops will install regular pipe (no chrome ****) for about 20 bucks a foot... that should end up being about 100 bucks on a jetta.

Speaking of tips, are you getting a nice muffler or a tip or something?
i thought it would be kinda pointless. what would that help me out with? i mean, i have a 52 hp non-turbo diesel. what would a tip get me....oh, and as you may know the tip of my exhaust that comes after my second muffler is about a mile long.

a tip will just make it look better than just having the stock exhaust end, i would do that if i were you it will just make your car look that much better.

LOL, i hate tips... Remember that tip I found on the road? It looked horrid on my jetta, needless to say, I got rid of that... Sam wouldnt even buy it for 50 cents! Oh well, if you want your car to sound mad sweet, then get 3 inch pipe with no muffler all the way from the down pipe back... It's a definate unique sound.

how loud is that? i talked to a shop yesterday (after biking of course) and i found out I CAN inact run a strait pipe in Vancouver... The law REQ a muffler is only if the car is too loud....
So my question is, how much louder does this make your car?
it's all good now. i used my technical expertise to fix my car...here is the list of tools and objects used:
1 9/16 socket w/ wrench
1 metal shears
2 9/16 nuts
2 u-bolts
1 empty can of kidney beans
ok....so i cut the can of kidney beans in half. wrapped it around the holy part of the exhaust. then i put the u-bolts on....done and done. no problem any more...sounds pretty cool too.

If you've ever had another car with a hole in the muffler, then you'll know how loud it is... The turbo will quiet down the exhaust a lot. If you want to hear how loud it is, there should be a little patch that you can unbolt to take off the exhaust, and you can hear how loud it is without the muffler.... It'll be considerably quieter if you run 3 inch pipe from turbo all the way back... the pipe will kind of act as a muffler. Have you ever heard the diesel trucks? It'll sound like those.... Loud, but not loud enough to be breaking laws.
you want loud. try this.
so, that little hole i fixed w/ my tin can cover up, is a little bigger of a problem.
i was driving along, and turned a corner....then i sounded like i was downshifting, but i was just coasting....then i hit the gas. it sounded like my dad's tractor without the muffler.....but 20x as loud.
what happened is right before my first muffler, my exhaust pipe broke right off.... hanging about 1" to 2" off the ground.
what sucks is i was at my g/fs house in a heavy res neighbourhood and i had to drive it home at 1 in the morning....ah well.
time to get that fixed.

lol... make a sound recording... I'd die to hear that.
sorry, i fixed it, so no tape for you.
i found that the piece i needed (a straight piece) cost a whopping 8 bucks at crappy tire. o well. it's all fixed right now.
