I was doing some more work on my VW today and I was pushing it with my head by the front tires and I could hear a weird noise, sort of like a piece of metal was dragging on the ground. Both front wheels did this, but not the rears. I am thinking it is just the brake pads on the rotor but I don't know.
Also, When I have the car in the air, I can grab the tire and wiggle it back and forth. Is this normal?
Thanks guys

yea thats bad. your wheel bearings are shot and loose, you need to replace them and prolly tighten up alot of stuff.

If I rent the bearing puller and pusher (and whatever else I need, rentals are free at Canadian Tire :D ), is it possible to replace the bearings myself? Should I do the rears while I'm at it? If I can't do it myself, how much should I be looking at spending (please specify CAN or USD etc)
Thanks guys.

After using the haynes, I would have to say it is pretty crappy. The information and proceedures are really barebone and they expect you to know how to do a lot already. For example, the steps for removing the bumper
1)Remove bumper
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Awesome.

50 cents?!?! well then, I guess my haynes is worth more value to me as paper for starting the fire.

im going to get a bently cuz my chiltons just pisses me off. like im very mechanicly*sp inclined so its not that hard but they don't get into detail on stuff they should, like wireing and vaccume. oh i think my head gasket is going, has anyone had to replace theres in a 1.8 8V? cuz if i gotta pull the damn head im going all out and port and polishing the thing and putting a cam and pretty much new valve train.

I'll be doing a valve job soon, so I have to remove my head, but I haven't done it yet. How much is the port and polish running you?

if you want to be cheap you could just port match everything yourself if you have a dremel heh :)
im not sure how much a P&P runs but it isnt cheap

yea thats what im doing, im going down the cheap road, im going to have to run 93 octane then but oh well ill pick up some ponys and i can advance my timeing as well. the head isn't hard to get off, you need to take off the valve cover and there will be i think 4 or 6 torx bolts holding them on.

thats pretty cool. If you just polish it, do you have to run higher octane?
Mortal_Wombat
