Here is a list of the oil viscosity you should use with the tempature. Temp done is farenheight.

Single Grade Oils:
70*-- 100* SAE 40
32*--77* SAE 30
15*--50* SAE 20W/20
-5* -- 20* SAE 10

Multi Grade Oils
15*--77* SAE 20W-50, SAE 20W-40
10*--77* SAE 15W-50, SAE 15W-40
0* --50* SAE 10W-40, SAE 10W-30
-20*--15* SAE 5W -20

so for a 95 turbo diesel jetta with 225k km in Vancouver/Seattle I should buy 20W 40?

it's always safer to go with a thinner oil on a diesel in case it gets cold for only a couple freak days.

In your car (the 95 TD) you can use 15w-40 all year round. Most autoparts sell 1 gallon jugs of Valvoline "Premium Blue" for around $13 USD. That's what I have used in my diesels since the beginning of time... in fact did an oil change today with this exact oil.
