Well I am reading through my 1992 VW parts magazine,(these magazines are amazing, I love them. Recycled inc, or the volkswagen home companion). Anyways, I came across a thing called a Racing oil baffle, I could post about the racing aspects if someone wants but right now I am just going to mention the diesel advantages of it, according to the magazine.
"this oil baffle is extremely helpful for older worn out diesels with bad rings that tned to run away on the highway. The cars run away becasue excessive oil is picked and drawn into the air cleaner. The engine then bruns this oil rather then the diesel fuel. If you ahve a diesel with more then 75000 miles youshould install one as a safelty precaution, even if your car has never ran away from you. If your car has already ran away, the cover will reduce chances of ithappening again. It acts asa baffle and returns extra oil into the crank case"
Back in 92 they were selling these suckers for 20 USD.

I've never known a car to "run away"

In a diesel, the rpm of the engine is controlled by the amount of fuel it gets... If excess oil blowby is entering the engine, the rpms of the engine will increase at inoppertune times (on the freeway)... So your foot is totally off the accelerator peddal, but the car is still accellerating.

BIG problem... My rabbit did this once or twice.
