A couple of days ago I found some old (1985 and 1991) VW part magazines. I was reading their helpful hints and came across this.
"4. The "RUNSTED FRONT AXLE BEAM": according to Volkswagen and your Volkswagen dealer, if you are driving a V.W. Bug with any rust between the axle beams you will immidiatly crash and die, becuase your wheels will fall off. Well, that just is not so. There are millions of bugs running up and down the road with rusted out beams; their drivers do not die instantly."
LOL these old magazines are pretty funny.
Here's thier little disclaimer.
"To avoid legal liability we must state these suggestions are NOT approved by Volkswagen and are NOT technically safe, so use them at your own risk. Be careful, use some common sence, if you don't have any disregard this entire article."
This is a letter that was sent in to the magazine
"He the Bug Place! Thanks alot! I busted my dads taillight He made me fix it! Even though I was a little timid at the idea, you convinced me that I could change it myself. You shipped the taillight and I changed it! The $38 dollars I saved will sure buy alot of beer (don't tell dad)!"
