I am doing a lot of body work to my car at the moment. I have some rust spots to grind out but the problem is some of them are in pretty small areas and it is hard for me to get my big grinder in there. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what I could use to get rid of the rust.
My second question is, once I get rid of the rust ( on the floor, underbody, and inside the fenders) should I use "black asphalt undercoating"? It is a rubberized, brushable tar like substance used for soundproofing and sealing and protecting metals.
the steps I will be taking (unless someone says otherwise) will be
1) grind the rust out
2) patch if necessary
3) apply a rust stop primer
4) either paint to match my current car color (until I can afford to get it professionally painted)
OR
apply the undercoating listed above

I have never done any of this before so before I destroy me Jetta maybe someone can help me out.
Thanks alot guys

go out and invest in a dremil tool. or somthing along those lines. then if there is a gap and crap. and if its not think, use bondo. it works wonders. then prime, and repaint.

from what i have gathered its better to cut out a rust hole and weld in new metal to replace it :) bondo its poo for the most part and soaks up water :(
if you do use bondo to patch a hole make sure you seal the backside of the bondo with primer and paint too...otherwise your gonna find rust in that same spot a few years down the road

Yo...

There is some kinda gel crap that they use at the body shop... You stick that gel crap on there, and it eats off all the rust... Then you just wash it off with water... Forgot what it is. You should call the local body shop and ask them about it... I'll bet they can give you a deal on a bottle of it.

That stuff sounds amazing, I would fear I wouldn't have a car left if I used that lol.
