odd noise on startup

i've got an 86 diesel coupe (not turbo), and it has no problems running. but every time i start it up, it makes a wierd intermittent grinding noise for about 3 seconds, and then stops. anyone know what that is?

All of my diesels have done that... I think it has something to do with the starter, but have no clue.
