Check to make sure all the alternator connections are right, and if there are any wires coming out of your transmission if they are connected... I believe the shift light runs off of a wire coming out of the tranny... Not exactly sure, however.... By the way, you better PULL YOUR DASH, just to make sure the collecting dust isnt hindering the operation of the light bulb.

i noted it. :D ill do that. it could be unpluged or somthing. i found that the e-break/seatbelt light was disconnected and when i reconnected it i found out why. it would go on and off and crap so i disconnected it again. lol could that just be a loos connection?

I spliced the wires together so my damn car would start without me having to put the seatbelt in.... If it goes on and off, then yeah... Definatly a loose connection.

i've got one of those, but the guy who owned it before me disconnected it, and i'm glad. that would annoy the eff out of me with a stupid flashing light going on all the time.

Yeah.... At night the light is so freaking bright! It would actually be a safety issue with me... That'd be the only thing I could see at night... I mean... Hell... The red light lights up the whole front seat area at night... LOL

mine stopped working about 2 years ago...
I dont really know when it died, but i figured it must be a sign that i graduated on learning stadard :) as i never used it anyhow.

The thing is useless anyways, it always wanted me to shift early...
I think it was just to give you an idea how to get the best millage from the car.

Its completly useless anyways, so dont sweat it

The shift light IS there to tell you when to shift for maximum economy. Shift lights only exist on the economy models of VW.. All the sport cars they are not there... Most NA diesels have them.

I thought the lite was tied into vacuum ie manifold vac thats how it got the signal to go on. a rabbit I had used to have one and if you ignored it and kept revvin it would go out.

might check vacuum lines and mabe there is a solenoid involved too

Mabey on the old old vw's, but on the new one's it uses a combination of sensors... One, the final drive to gear ratio (also used for speedometer), and the other one the tachometer.

Its right between the tach and speedo on the very top. Right above your turn signals, and warning lights (temp, oil pressure etc).

BTW my shift light still works, and it defintly doesn't use vacum lines. The chances of it being a loose connection behind the dash is less then 5% becuase there is only 2 connectors on the cluster so if one was loose, half your stuff wouldn't work. It may be a burned out bulb or something to that effect.
