so tonight i was driving home, a belt started to squeal a little bit and then my battery light came on and then it started to over heat and my water light started flashing, lights dimmed and then the car died. i drove it for about 5 minutes after all the lights came on, and the heat gauge started to cool back down. a belt broke. its not the out side belt, or the belt to the alternator, but i believe it was to my water pump. no chocolate milk in the oil, tho. anyone have any conclusions as to what may have happend?
also i have a shimmy in my front end when i drive. its not the cv joints as they are brand new, maybe my tie rods?

Either of the two main belts should turn the water pump... It's kind of a redundancy.... ( the water pump has two pulleys ). Perhaps you can take a picture and show me your belt setup and which belt broke? Anytime you loose a belt you need to immediately shut the car down and determine what the loss is. Alternator, power steering and A/C you can live without. No water pump and your engine is toast almost immediately.

well here is how my set up is.....
main pulley has 2 gears on it
inside gear runs to my water pump, then to my ac compressor
the other belt runs from my ac compressor to my alternator
the out side gear runs directly to my power steering.
now catch this. who ever the dumb ass who had my car before me had taken a 22 inch belt and somehow gotten it to fit the powersteering pump. it was so far up and a bolt that holds the powersteering pump on backed out and hit my water pump pully causing it to seize and snap the belt. i ran it for 5 minutes. i had the fan running to keep it cool before the car completely died.
Good news- car still runs good just the usual valve knocks and ticks.
Bad news - no one had my belt so i had to go an hour away to get them and cost me about 45 bucks for all my new belts....
so in conclusion. my car is still alive, and running. it just sucks that the i***ts before me put a smaller belt on the pump and had the bolt way to close the the water pumps pulley... i guess they were trying to "AFRO-ENGINEER" a way for the ps to work

Bump. Well at least your car is still running. Just change the whole power steering system. I think the previous owner tried to modify parts that are way too normal
