I am rebuilding an 85 jetta 1.6 td motor. It had Mechanical lifters. The head had cracks in the pre chambers. I bought a hydraulic head casting, (unbuilt up).I put it together using new valves and hydraulic lifters, and the old springs keepers and cam. The problem was that all the valves were held open when the cam was installed. The valves that were supposed to be closed were about 6mm open!
So I went back to the mechanical lifters. now I find that the valve springs are not under as much compression as in the old head. I measured the distance between the cam bearings and the surface the valve sits on, and the new head has that surface lower (about 6 mm) then the old mechanical head. Are the valves for the Hydraulic head shorter?

I've heard the valves are differant between the Solid and Hyd heads.
I think I have a couple intake valves (new) that I belive are for a Solid head. I can measure and post up if it will help.

The valves for the Hyd. head are shorter. After buying up enough parts heads I was able to build up 2 good heads. Nice to have one on the shelf.
