Take a pic?
I'm sure if you have the correct tools you can change them without removing the intake.

Yeah... take us a picture if you would. We don't get much of that stuff here in North America... just a few engine options... the base engine being a 2.0L 8V. I know that there are several American cars that require you to remove the intake plenum to get to the spark plugs... Sinces it sounds like you have a 4 cylinder it will probalby be alot easier. If you do have to remove the intake manifold, don't worry... it's not that bad. I can tell you exactly how to do it.
I searched for about 30 minutes and couldn't find a single damn picture of the 1.6 in your Golf... I did find:

But that doesn't really help us here. Does your engine happen to look anything like these?

thanks for all of your replies ,my engine doesn't look like those shown, it's a 1.6 sohc. 75Kw @5600r.p.m. codeBFQ. the lnlet manifold consists of 4 plastic pipes coming from the injector body down over the spark plugs to the cylinder head below the plugs.ther is also a secondary air pump that has to be moved.
