Hello everyone,

I'm Bryan, live in Pasadena, MD, and I am currently looking for a barely used VW. I currently drive an SRT-4, and I love it, but its time for something different. I've had Chevy, Dodge, and now its time for the only IMPORT il go anywhere near, a volkswagen.

My questions are:

1. If i plan on turbo, which would be the best bang for the buck:

a. GTI
b. R32
c. Rabbit

2. How is the Aftermarket upgrades for these cars? do they respond well to upgrades?

3. How easy are they to work on?

4. Turbo kits for these cars that have been proven to do well and make good power?? Where are they?

I enjoy driving, so I want a manual, so that ALMOST rules out R32 from the get go, but I might find one I like and it might sway my decision.
Thanks for the information in advance guys!! I did some searching, and found a few answers to my other questions!!

isn't the R32 like a performance version of the Golf? it would make sense for there to be more manuals of those than either the GTI or the Rabbit, unless it's an old Rabbit of course... ;p

first off welcome to the site.

please calm down. understand that you are talking new models, which not too many people know a tonne about.

there are people here that will be able to answer your questions. plus give it time. you only posted 7 hours ago. people will post.

woah, i'm sorry bud.. i wasn't trying to make you mad or anything, your post simply made me question my own beliefs. I know how informative these people can be and i was hoping someone could inform myself while helping you out as well. Is the purpose of these forums not to further each other's knowledge of VW's? I just didn't think it was big enough to post my own thread about and that it had some relevence to do with what you said/asked...

sorry for the inconvenience...

Man! Calm, my friend. Forums are for discussion not just blind answers to questions. If Dubnet doesn't suit your needs, you might try VWvortex.com. They have something like 700,000 members.... just remember to take a flame suit with you.

Anyways, there is a large aftermarket for VW. There aren't as many aftermarket parts for the Mark 5's beins they have only been out for a few years, but give it time and there will be many. (I assume you are talking about new Volkswagens if you are considering a Rabbit) If you wanted to try something a little older you might consider a 2000 or 2001 Jetta or Golf 1.8T. There is a HUGE aftermarket there.

Boosted17psi, I understand that you want to stick with a turboed car, i am the same way. First off the gti is the only turbocharged car out of the 3. Secondly i looked at a new r32 to trade my new gti in and was not impressed by any means. Yeah it looks great and sound even better but if you are used to turbo's then the power delivery of the 3.2 litre isn't going to make you happy. I love my gti and wouldn't want to change the car at all......

I'm sorry but.. are you crazy?

I've driven an R32, and the 3.2L V6 + AWD is WAY faster than any stock 1.8T. AND there is no turbo lag. As far as power goes, the R32 wins hands down.

HA HA first off my car is not a stock 1.8t... its a 2.0t fsi which is a pretty big difference in power. Secondly the NEW R32 in my opinion is not worth the money for what kind of power you get out of it, Which is not much of a difference from the gti 2.0.... It is all about the power delivery and turbos do it better.

Oh and turbo lag... What are you smokin man, these turbos are the size of *****s.... That's not turbo lag..... MY peak torque is at 1800 rpm. What's lagging?

you drive a 91 corrado don't to me anymore punk

Wooooooooooooaahhhhh!!! Let's not get in a big rant over whos car wins and whos car doesn't. Both the cars are freaking amazing... The 2008 R32 does have about 50 more hp than the 2.0T and it has AWD. In a straight line, the 2.0T can be modified to be faster than a R32, but in the track the 2.0T equipped GTI/Jetta will have it's ass handed to it every time. With that said, I really don't think the two cars compete. They are both meant for different types of driving. The turbo 4cyl and VR6 debate goes all the way back to when the 1.8T first came out... They both have strong points and weak points. And the argument will NEVER end because there enthusiasts on both sides.

To an extent, I kind of agree with erk about the cost of the R32... the cost is getting a little rediculous... but it's getting rediculous across the board... not just with VW. The R32 directly competes with the STI/Evo which are priced similarly.

My personal preference? I like turbo 4 cylinders. Why? I like the powerband a turbo delivers. I also like the economy a turbo 4 cylinder delivers. I still respect the R32 for what it is though... 250hp in a 3400lb car with AWD is a killer, man. The old Mark IV derived R32 was getting almost identical track times as the same year STI and the STI had 60 more HP.... That has to account for something.

But seriously... They both have strong points and weaknesses over each other. It's pointless for VW enthusiasts to get in a pissing match with each other over 2.0T/VR6... What it really comes down to is personal preference. Can't we all just get along? :D

Thank you mr. diesel.
The origination of this thread was a simple question that in my opinion had never been answered, with that said the man said that he liked turbo's and me being a turbo lover as well, also a proud owner of a new gti I told him to look at them. I also stated how I was thinking of trading my mkV gti in on an MKV r32 and when I finally test drove one there was no reason to spend all that money on not much more than what I have and love.... TURBO!!!!! That's all I was saying and this kid calls me crazy.......

I understand.... But the VR6 really has kind of a cult following. Some say the sound alone is worth it's weaknesses. The VR6 really is a engineering and mechanical work of art... Yeah, it has air flow issues, but for what it is, it's amazing. It broke the mold of what engineers said could and couldn't be done.

The VR6 is dated though... I think the latest 3.2 and 3.6 VR6 are just getting bigger and bigger to compete with better designs. I have a hard time invisioning the VR6 lasting much longer than 1 more generation. With fuel prices going the way they are, I invision engineers leaning towards higher strung 4 cylinder engines. (higher boost/compression, etc). There are people reporting 40mpg in chipped 1.8T cars on the highway.

Don't get me wrong though... I am a huge VR6 fan too. I just LOVE the sound. I think it's as close to "muscle" as a Volkswagen can get. Of course, it's a dated design, but it has SOUL... something that some turbo 4 cylinders can never have. I think the soul, feel, sound and personality of a VR6 is what has kept it going so long.

Anyways... enough of my off topic nonsense.

Hey man, I didn't mean to offend you, I have nothing against turbos, I myself had a 97 Jetta which I turboed, and have never owned a 6 cylinder. All I was trying to say is that there is no replacement for displacement. Particularly in a modded car, 6 cylinders is generally going to be faster than 4.

On a side note though, I don't think it was necessary for you to stoop to the level of insulting the car that I drive. It might be older, but I can wipe the floor with most modern day cars, so please watch your tone...

I just thought I'd throw my cents in too :)

I almost feel like an outcast, but I love my VR6. I know it has it's downsides, but pretty much every car does. The sound is awesome and the instant power is fun :)

When I raced it at the drag races, I took every person off the line [except those damn AWD's :P ] and would stay ahead for the majority of the race. The downside here is that then their boost would kick in and pass me almost every time right at the end.

I plan on eventually supercharging it, hopefully near the end of the year. Then we'll see what happens :) and I still would've spent less than if I were to buy an R32 :D

wow, ok alot of anger in here. listen, whether you have the VR6 or the 4 banger, its still a Volkswagen and were still eating hondas and other imports up, we get pretty good gas millage and well not to many people actually take the time to fix vw's up. with that said,

The VR6 is a great motor, i have a friend who has a mk2 golf with a VR swap and omfg! its like an orgasm when it takes off and your pushed into the seat and the sound of the car is just about the best sound you will ever hear! but diesel is right, The VR6 is an old technology that probably wont be going any further than another generation.

but if your looking for gas mileage and still some nice power, go with the 1.8T or some sort of a 4 cylinder, given doesnt sound as nice as the vr6, but with an intake and a nice cat back still sounds pretty nice, and they are reasonable to work on, and or turbo charge em.

im still debating, since my 2.0 16v is on its last leg, whether or not to do the swap with the VR6 or build up a 2.0 aba block with a 1.8 16v head, with a turbo. but either way its going to be a while

pretty much your gonna get the most out of a turbo on the gti because the engine is designed to run a turbo. as for rabbit you can turbo it and get around 240 hp to the wheels but it would be a risk going farther with stock internals. and the r32 is just way to expensive to mod turbowise. if you want to spend the least without ruining your engine gti would be the smartest decision. btw i love mark 4 vr6s <3 lol
