Is there any maintenance or anything that should be done to a tranny or any other part of the case? I just pulled the engine and transmission and I figured now would be a good time to change fluid or anything that should be done. Its out of an 81 vw pickup.

The only maintenance item is the fluid, and i'ts not necessary to change it unless it's dirty. There should be a plug back near the differential. Take the plug out. The fluid level should be just below that plug. Stick a pen or your finger in there and see how if there are any contaminations. If it's not clean, then change it. Use gear oil... forgot what weight to use, but the auto parts stores can tell you for sure.

If you are replacing your clutch while it's out, I would recommend getting a clutch kit that comes with a new throw out bearing. They are a little frustrating to replace while the trans is in the car, so do it while it's out.

Check for leaks of any kind. There should be NO leaks whatsoever. If there are any leaks, fix it now.

If there are any whining gears or griding between shifting, you might need a rebuild. It wouldn't hurt to take it to a transmission shop and have them take a look at it, but I am sure that would cost some money.
