Wheel Bearings, and/or Tranny

My 96 Jetta makes this "Grindy Whine" when I top a hill and get weight off of the suspension. The duration is longer if the top of a rise breaks left. This leads me to believe the the left rear wheel bearing is going. It happens whether or not the tranny is in gear, and the frequency (pitch) seems tied to wheel speed. Additionally there is an.... intermittent (read pulsing) vibration at 60 to 70 mph that disappears when I engage the clutch. I'm thinking syncronizers or something transmission related. But it ocurrs in 4th or 5th gear. I have 190K miles (so far) and the engine is tight. It neither spills nor burns oil and has OK pep for a 4 cyl. Any thoughts? I'm new here and came (away) from jetta owners club.

The way you describe it sounds like a CV joint... Cause when you top a hill, that makes the wheels go further away from the car, thus a more sharp of an angle on the CV joints... A way you can test for CV joint weakness is to get under your car with some vice grips, or pipe wrench and gently twist the drive axel in either direction. If there is any play/movement in the drive axel when the wheel is on the ground, that means the CV joint is worn out and weakened. A wheel bearing will make a sound much like your clothes washer in spin mode, this is usually on acceleration/deceleration. If the wheel bearing is really bad, you will hear it all the time, and will increase in sound intensity with speed (mind numbing at highway speeds). The tranny will generally not make this kind of sound... I'm almost positive it's your CV's. For the most part, you can associate grinding with CV's. Again, bearings will make a hum. Hums could also be unballanced rims, or a tire ready to blow out (there is a difference in sound). Loud whines from automatic transmissions. With in association with VW's, that's a great way to diagnose a common problem with high mileage VW's like that.
