Hey guys I'm from Richmond, VA. I've been working with wood (har har) for about 8 years and I just recently started making shift knobs. I figured, since a lot of vw drivers like the look and feel of wooden knobs, that I would use my talent to start producing them for the vw community. But I won't say that's the only reason I'm trying to sell them...lately my fiance and I have fallen on some hard times and we're a bit hard up for money. We're supposed to be getting married next year but we've already had to push the wedding back. Both of our cars have gotten to the point where they need to be replaced our cat has been sick lately so we've been taking her to the vet and spending a lot of money we don't have...there are some other things but I won't bore you with my sob story.
Anyway I hope you guys like them enough to want one...I like to think I do good qaulity work and everyone who's bought one has said they really like it a lot.
The wood I use the most is Padauk wood which is imported from Africa. It is used primarily for its stability and good looks. The knobs are very strong...Just yesterday I accidentally dropped one onto a pile of chisels on my work bench and it didn't even scratch the knob. I've also used marble wood which ends up looking nice too. I will make one out of any kind of wood you choose. custom knobs will be priced accordingly.
I spend about an hour on each knob. I hand sand each one from 80 grit to 600 grit and then apply 3 coats of wax...buffing between each coat. It leaves a nice finish on the knob. I drill and tap a hole where I insert a helicoil which allows the knob to fit very snug onto the shift rod. There is no wiggle at all in the knob once it is installed.
I've been shooting my mouth off too long...here are some pictures of my current "stock". Again if you see one you want, I will be making more so you will get the one you want. Please let me know. Thanks everyone. If nothing else, I hope you enjoyed looking at pictures of some of the work I do.
Edit: Price is $25 shipped
