Welcome to Dubnet! The mark 3 dashboard will fit in the mark 2 width-wise, but there is a lot of cutting required in the back. I don't think the mark 3 dash would fit because the mark 3 is a lot wider than the rabbit. Have you considered a mark 2 dash?

A mk3 dash will fit, but with a LOT of modification.

I've heard New Beetle dashes are good, because you can cut the middle since they have that piece over them, and then just slide that piece back over and no one would know =]

The new beetle dash is very good looking. Very modern style... That would probably be your best bet.... but you'd have to do some hacking because the NB dash is very long (because the engine sits so far back in the car) Anyway, did you have a Rabbit in mind? You should try to get a diesel one if you can ;)

why a diesel? i have never been a fan of diesel cars but the whole tdi thing is very clever.

I like diesel because they are cool and different. A maintained Rabbit diesel can get 45mpg, which is another benefit. Diesels can run on vegetable oil as fuel. Diesel cars (atleast here in the US) are interesting conversation pieces. I love telling people my CAR is a diesel... Some people think it's just the wierdest thing they have ever heard of. Hehehehe... *** bless the ignorant. :)

About the nb dash... I would first start looking in the wrecking yards... The NB was a fairly popular car so you should be able to find them in some of the higher end wrecking yards. That woudl probably be your only option unless you can find a NB donor car that you can buy and get everything you need... You would probably have to make a custom instrument cluster, but that wouldn't be too hard if you use aftermarket gaugues like Autometer or something.

i see... are diesels as fast as regular gasoline fuled cars? That might be a stupid question lol i am ignorant aswell.

Turbo diesels are pretty quick... If you found a naturally aspirated rabbit I think you would find it a bit slower than you expected. Only problem is older (non TDI) diesels are very hard to find here in the states... You can find them, but buying one would probably entail going out of state.

Interesting... Are the mechanics on diesel engines harder than regular gasoline engines?

They are actually extremely easy to work on.
In most cases easlier than gassers.

There are a few things one must learn to work on diesels, but overall the old mechanical diesels are SO SIMPLE!!! The engine runs fully on mechanical means... there is no electronic fuel injection, no spark (ignition) system. There are lots of benefits to diesel. Get a diesel bunny, you won't regret that purchase.
