do you recommend some sort of a flush or cleaning before going to synthetic oil? Also at 213k km is there still benefits from a swap?

No flush required... Just use synthetic oil on your next change. Synthetic is way better than conventional in many different ways. Only problem I have heard is that using synthetic on a higher mileage engine can cause gaskets to leak. If this is the case for you, replace the gaskets or revert to conventional oil.

another problem i have noticed when using synthetic on a high mileage engine is that you may notice more "clicking" from the valves. this is actually a good thing because the gunk and build up that used to be in there which would dampen the sound and tappet impact has been removed thanks to the synthetic.

if you do change over (and i do highly recommend it) you will want to remove the oil pan and clean it out before putting in your 1st synthetic fill and again on your 1st synthetic change. this will ensure that you get all of the gunk and build up out of your engine. also as Mr. Diesel stated, some of your gaskets might leak after changing; i would consider this a good thing because eventually they would have leaked anyway its just that you are aware of it now before it became a real problem. after all that, i still recommend changing to synthetic.
