95 Jetta GL Turbo diesel. 213k km's.
Mechanic checked the bolts on the pulley and they were pretty tight, but he was able to torque them down a little tighter and this made the noise go away. The noise is like a rattling sound, like loose or shot bearings rattling around. He lock-tite'd them and hopefully this will remedy the situation, but this does seem strange as they weren't really loose to begin with.
Anybody else been down this road?

The crankshaft pulley? That's common on the 1.9D and the 1.8 G60.

wrench man said it was the power steering pulley. He is not much of a diesel man however, (by his own admission.)

Hmmm... since it's the PS pulley, I wouldn't worry about it unless the sound comes back. Even, then... a quick trip to the junkyard and you could get a cheap replacement if necessary. If it comes down to that, hit me up and I can tell you how it's done... easy as pie.

lock tite must have done the trick, no signs of noise yet...

Thanks for sharing. I found this thing interesting even thought it's a bit old. I think the crankshaft pulley is not loose but not tight enough to begin with.
