By 1991 Passat 4 cylinder, I assume you are talking about the 16V 9A engine. The answer is yes, it will bolt up to your mark 3. I believe you will have to swap the motor mounts from your Golf, but they should bolt right up to the 16V engine with no problem. Your Golf transmission is also the correct one you'd need to bolt up to the Passat clutch/flywheel. To answer your question about the pistons, the answer again, is yes. The pistsons are 100% flat on top with the exception of "eyebrows" for the intake valves which are cut into the front of the pistons.

The problem we have is the 9A Passat 16V engine does NOT have a crank position sensor.... Therefore the engine is incompatible with your stock fuel management on the Golf. If you were to make this swap, you would need to get standalone management like megasquirt (Patatron sells good ones http://volksearch.com/patatron) or you can make your own. You can also get systems from 034 efi amongst others... check out Summit Racing's website for those.

You CAN put all the internals from the passat engine into your aba engine. (aba is the stock 2.0L engine in your Golf) then you can slap the 16V head on top and you'd be set to go! A 16V Mark III would be very very cool. The 16V engine was the stock, baseline engine in the european Mark III, but we got stuck witha 2.0L 8V engine...
