i have a 01 jetta vr6 how can i tell if its the 24 valve, dohc model that has like 220 horsepower?

12v, 174hp VR6's were available in MKIV's from 1999.5 until around 2002.5.

24v, 200hp VR6's were avaialble in MKIV's from around 2002.5 on.


As with all VW's production there are some cars that do not fit the mold, so if your car is a model year 2002, it could be either.
Simplest way to tell the difference is to look at the engine cover. The 12v VR6's have red spark plug wires inset into the engine cover. The 24v VR6's have no spark plug wires at all. Both the 12V and 24V are "DOHC" engines meaning there are two cams in a single head, but the 12V is kind of a wannabe DOHC cause it only has 2 valves per cylinder. The 24V (IIRC) also only has 2 cams but 4 valves per cylinder.

i have the 12 valve but it feels really strong. it dosent seem like i have that power it feels like i have the 200 or so cuz ive raced two mustang gts and i absolutly kill them and they have over 200 horsepower and i know a freaind that has a 03 v6 stang that has 200 horsepower and its like the mustang is a s******, i just absoulty smoke it. is the jetta really lighter than the mustang or is the engine just that amazing?

I had a factory stock 95 GTI VR6 a long while back and there was this kid that had a Mustang GT convertible... It was prom night, so he had his date and his buddy (also with a date). He had big old flowmaster mufflers and huge rims. You could hear him coming from a mile away. I'm sure he had great success beating the little 1.6L civics so his self esteem was high when he met me at a stop light. We raced to about 45mph... It was clear that my car was MUCH faster. He was about 10 car lengths back. I heard him downshift a few gears to do a "ricer fly by"... by the time he had closed the gap to 5 car lengths I was already in second gear at 45mph and leaving him in the dust. We came to the next stop light... he was revving his loud gas guzzling engine at me. He had the top down so I said... dude... you just got your ass handed to you twice... you want to keep embarassing yourself in front of your date? He peeled off trying desperately to salvage his ego, I again, blew his doors off. That had to be the most satisfying night of my life.

But... beating a Mustang GT is no accomplishment... ;) You've gotta remember that a VR6 car weighs about 25,000lbs less than a Mustang. I've gotta say the newest Mustang GT will blow YOUR doors off though. those are fast... 300hp. I raced one at a stoplight race with the same GTI to 50mph and the Mustang had about 4 or 5 car lengths on me. It wasn't that impressive of a race, but they are a force to be reckoned with. I'll bet you 240hp in a German car would easilly deliver a slap in the face to a new Mustang GT.

o i will post up pics whenever my girlfreind decides to charge the digi cam lol i could give u some on friday or saturday. im in the process of installin 4 point harnesses and im getting 3a racing bucket seats that are black and red leather in two weeks. and the windows will be tinted and im getting a alpine headunit.

lol its no exsucuse. she has the camera at her house so i have to get it sometime. i just got the 4 point harnesses put in today it was quite a job but i had done it before on a saturn but the vw's are just a little bit harder lol. but all in all it looks great and i didnt have to do much in terms of making them fit so that was good but i did have to do some trimming of the carpet, (cant be seen anyway), a littel trimming of the center console which also cannot be seen because it is on the side of the seats. either this weekend or the next i am going to buy the alpine headunit which one, idk yet. then right after i get that and get it installed i am going to get the windows tinted (cant wait, red and black just look awsoem together. i get these two things cuz its my birthday and i aint paying for any of it.
