2.0 won't start

hey i was driving my car 96 jetta gl an it died everything shut off when i try to restart nothing happens ..when i turn the key forward nothing comes on lights in dash radio ext..but if i turn the lights on one hit the brights with the key forward the dash and radio an stuff comes on but no attemt to turn over..any help will be very appreciated cause i cannot figure this out-steve

I'll take a few stabs in the dark. First guess is that a ground strap broke, second is that your ECU crapped out, but I think you would still have lights with no ECU but I might be wrong

yeah the ground strap was good..is it comon fo rthe ecu to go out

Do you have a Factory alarm/immobilizer in this car? My MKIII Jetta had a simmilar problem, override the alarm and check again... Believe it or not, on some of your older vw's double tapping your brights quickly actually switched on your ignition.

yes it does have a factory alarm what would i go about doing to overide it

Check below your steering, to the right you will find a place where your remote can push into... once you push it in there you will see both your alarm and immobilizer lights will stay on when you turn your ignition on. Alternitavely disconnect your alarm completely by unplugging the harness from the 'black box' behind your cubby-hole.

i was trying to find the alarm but still had no luck..the car didn't come with a remote the alarm only turns on when you lock the car from outside the car

and have you tried to disconnect the unit totally?
