Uhh... no. Lowering your car lowers your center of gravity, therefore improving your handling. Now if you lower your car on its belly, like I did, then it still handles better than stock, but not as good as it could.
Seriously though, once you lower your car, you will realize how bad looking the stock ride height is. I didn't understand either until I lowered mine.
Other than lowering though, some good beginner mods would be a front upper strut bar, chip, maybe a cam if you trust yourself. Umm... that's all I can think of right now for bolt-ons (other than exhaust, but you should probably bring it to a shop for that).
Post up some pics of your car man, we're curious

Yeah, first thing I'd do would be some lower/stiffer suspension, intake/exhaust and maybe a chip of sorts?

Speaking of chips, I'll have a GIAC chip for sale in a couple weeks that's burnt for a cam. I'm turboing, so I'm changing software :)
but yea, lower that thing!!

Slamming your car does not improve handling, it can actually make it worse. You get the best handling when your A-arms are parallel to the ground.
Stiffening up the body will make driving it more fun. Usually an upper strut brace is the first thing recommended.
As far as engine goes, A freeflowing exhaust and improved air intake would probably see the biggest gains (that includes a cam) Then a chip would be a good idea.
