View Full Version : Dubnet Needs New Software and Servers (opinions too!)

Hey everyone... Dubnetworks.net has reached a limit where PHP Nuke and PHPbb are not really effective anymore. PHP Nuke is an open source and free forum software that is fantastic for starting out, but it is very limited and very slow.

The Nuke database can only become so large before it kills itself in inefficiency.

Secondly, the server we are on is very loaded down. PHP queries take an extended amount of time to parse. You'll notice when you click on something it will take quite some time to start loading because the server is backed up on PHP parsing.

I am researching the possibility of upgrading to vbulletin... for a few reasons, actually.

1. LOTS more secure.
2. A lot more flexible and feature filled.
3. MUCH faster.

There are issues.

The whole reason we are here now is because a certain site decided to upgrade to vbulletin and it ruined a lot of things. I can promise that none of that nonesense will happen. I also promise that the site look and feel will remain very similar to what we have now. Obviously there will be some major changes, but the overall idea will remain the same.

The costs associated with this upgrade is $160.00 for the vbulletin license, and an additional $10.00 - $20.00 /month for a faster server that supports the latest dynamic code parsers.

ANY donation towards this upgrade is graciously accepted. If you donate, even a few dollars your rank will be 7 Stars (vw emblems) and it will say "Site Donations & Sponsor". Help me out here folks... The operation of this site has come out of my pocket since 2001... I do however need you guys to know that it has been an investment. I am totally stoked to have you guys here. Everybody here makes it happen.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for using Dubnet!

Ah, that explains the slow loading times. Well I trust that you will do your best to keep the feel of the site the same, so I say go for it. I actually trust your judgement, unlike the jettaowners guy.

*Ponders the idea of an extra star  *

The original jetta owners guy was a stud... I have actually been in communication with him recently, and the decision to upgrade to vbullitien had a lot to do with him... The guy that bought it tried to mold it into the scene that makes up the rest of his websites, and now it's nothing but a site for people who like to rice out jetta 2.0's.

hmmm. seems odd someone with the name burn your money is willing to make a donation.

ah, i remember the good times of the conversion and revolution to this site. *looks in wallet, sees a moth fly out* but i really can't help out yet. do hugs, kisses and best wishes work? (in a masculine non-sexual way, of course)

you seem to have a good head on your shoulders, so as long as you don't sell, i'm fine with it.

I sent you $8.88 to be cool instead of sending $8 or $9 or $10.

Actually, I wasn't sure what I had left in my PayPal account so since $8.88US is like $10.19 Canadian I could safely assume that that was in my account.

Thanks for the donations guys! Burn your money, allthough we have had a few generous donations it is still far less than the needed 160 dollars. I need to pay my rent and car payment before I can afford to dump more money into this site... The site upgrade is coming soon... don't worry.

I purchased a vBulletin license and hosting last night... As soon as I can get a few things sorted out, we should be good to go on the new vBulletin site! Please note that dubnet will be shut down before the data is exported to vBulletin to help prevent wierd errors... The site shoudl only be down a few hours to get the data transfered over, then a few more hours to allow the dns changes to occur on the domain name... I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for using Dubnet. :D

Coolio, I can't wait. I really think the slowness is effecting the amount of posts we are getting

Change your POS avator :P get something true to your name... like your TD rabbit  (I'm not hating on your 16v, I know it was lots of work and it's probably piles of fun to drive, just diesels are better)

Okay... quick update. I am hiring my buddy to do the hard stuff and we are going to give it a shot on the upcoming wednesday of next week.... At any rate, we should atleast be able to give you guys access to the new site before I finish all the images, layouts and appearance so we can get off this nasty slow site and insecure software.

Updates to come.

That's cool of you, I'd thank you, but I'm not a moderator, and I don't own the site.
