I need your guys' opinion on buying a VW. After test driving a couple models I thought I narrowed it down to the VR6 Golf.....I actually drove a Jetta, but i like the golf body better and the performance numbers are the same, so...

Well, here's my dilemma. I've been holding off for a VR6 that I like (color/options), but I’ve ran into a 1.8t 337 edition in my area for a pretty good price. It's going for about the same as all other vr6's that I’ve seen. What would you guys suggest I do?? Wait for a VR6 that I like or go for the 337? The color is the one i want and it looks GOOD stock!!! I don't really plan on much upgrading on either (if 1.8t, maybe chipped when warrenty expires)

A quick response would be appreciated, I’m going to look at the 337 tonight and he's selling it back to the dealer if I don't want it.....

it all depends on what you want., but my vote goes to the 337. it will have better resale because its more rare, it looks better so theres not much you would need to do in the way of mods. honestly the only reason i would get the vr6 is for the sound and the power potential. but the 1.8t will be faster for less money. oh and you dont have to wait for your warranty to expire to chip it

Don't rush into anything.
Please, if you really want a VR6, I suggest getting a VR6. You know deep down what you really want and if you jump onto a fleeting deal you may come to regret it. I know this from personal experience, I jumped into my Plymouth Laser and now I have to sell it because I didn't take the time to consider the fact that:

a) I can't take this up to the ski hill
b) I can't take all my stuff with my to university
c) I can't take more than 2 passengers comfortably

Thankfully, it may be sold tomorrow, but take my poor personal experience as a tip and get exactly what you want.

Like Tisforturbo said, the 337 will have better resale, and will be a little bit faster than a stock vr6. If you didnt plan on modding the car, I would get the vr6. They sound AMAZING at wide open throttle. I just took my VR6 GTI on a trip and got 29mpg on the highway... I think the VR6 is a good medium between fun/performance and usability/economy... Granted, I love jettas and GTI's My favorite Volkswagen model is the MkIII Jetta. If I was into speed, racing and performance, I would get the 1.8T because I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on these kind of things, and my money would get me further in the 1.8T as far as performance is concerned like Tisforturbo said. Only thing I don't like about the 1.8T and any turbocharged engine, for that matter, is they are high strung. Granted the 1.8T and most turboed engines are built to different and stronger specifications, still... They are forced induction engines, and if treated the same way as a non turbo engine, the non turbo engine is going to last longer. I am not saying this is a bad thing, or that turbo engines don't last, I am just trying to say is that turbo engines that make a lot of power and are performance driven wear out more quickly.

ANYWAY... That is just my opinion. If you didnt plan on modding the car, I would get the VR6. Nothing sounds better than the resonance of a naturally apirated VR6. I think they sound better than most V8 american cars.

Thanks guys! The input was usefull and helped me in my decision.

I ended up driving both the VR6 and 337 last night. It was tough.....your right, the VR6 did sound better but the 337 was every bit as fast and will be faster for less $. So when it came down to it, I ended up getting the 337. With all the perfomance options-brakes, wheels, seats, body, etc, it seems like the better buy (plus the guy just dropped $4000 into the system, which works out since i'm keeping my civic to drive in the **** weather so i'll have a system in both!!). Like I said before, i don't really plan on spending a lot on mods....maybe intake, exaust and chip (maybe maybe boost control) and i think i'll get more for my money that way. Plus the handling on the 337 was much better and i'm not all about speed.

SteveXs2, i really think your right with your suggestion to wait and get exactly what I want. I'm pretty particular about what I want and usually don't jump until I find IT and exactly it. But in this case, got to drive the 337 and VR6 back to back....the 337 won over all.

Thanks Guys!

Any one know if it would be practical to use this with a new ECU? I'm not to familiar with turbos yet, still doing my research....

i know, dont bother with an MBC if youre on the stock turbo, just chip it and be done! you wont make any more power, its just a waste of money :)
